Average flu season is about 3 months. Splitting the difference, that’s about 45k deaths or 15k per month WITH A VACCINE.

Covid is now being accepted as being in the US since January. So as of 8/7, that’s roughly 8.25 months. They’re counting the total death toll at about 160k. That’s about 19.4k deaths per month.

If we calculate the flu death toll for 8.25 months using the average of 15k per month FOR SOMETHING WE DO HAVE A VACCINE FOR; it comes out to about 124k deaths. Keep in mind that many of that 160k death toll have been attributed to Covid, despite many of them being related to other fatal incidents.

So we are shutting down the entire economy, causing businesses to close (permanently), mandating ppl wear masks everywhere and stand apart, causing political turmoil, allowing ourselves to be controlled by fear, etc because of something with about the same death toll as something that’s not regarded as a global pandemic and is a normal illness.

Those with underlying issues or personal concerns remain free to make whatever alterations or modifications they feel the need to for their daily lives, BUT mandating that everyone has to comply with your fear via manipulation is selfish and wrong. We are being manipulated by the media for selfish politics purposes.

Have a great day, OT.

China knew about Wuhan Flu since at least early November which likely means it had been out and about since October. It’s been here since at least Thanksgiving.

No shite. Everyone knows this. This is a control and power thing. It’s never been about public safety. It’s about Nov 3.

We just need to do this to flatten the curve. Then we can go back to normal.

I'm not sure I agree with the numbers in these two sentences.

The time frame is off, and your math doesn't work out based on those three months and the numbers you provided in the title.

Depends on who wins the presidential election and which party controls Congress.

Yeah. The flu season is like 8 months anyways, but the reason it’s only 8 months is that it tends to go away in the summer, which didn’t happen with COVID.

Not to mention the flu kills in average about 38,000 (not 45,000) and COVID deaths (and cases with little testing) didn’t really start until March with the CDC’s official “start date” is February 1st.

The OP basically misrepresented every data point he provided.

You spent a lot of time typing out a big long post filled with information that everyone knows already. It's too late to turn back now. The damage is done.

What are your thoughts on the Hope-Simpson model, and this thing appearing to act like flu in more tropical climates, in regards to seasonality?

Outside of Louisiana (Mardi Gras), southern states didn't start "spiking" until June. Looking elsewhere in the world, it does seem to have a seasonal effect firing up right now.

People tout the flu death numbers without question, but complain that covid death numbers are not exact.

The flu death numbers are also inexact. Estimates are based on reports from a sample of hospitals and put into a mathematical model.

The CDC says "Only counting deaths where influenza was recorded on a death certificate would be a gross underestimation of influenza’s true impact."

Yet some don't want to acknowledge a covid death unless it is on the death certificate and the person's dying words are "I have covid."

This is a novel topic. Glad we could bring this to the forefront since nobody has discussed this topic.

We don't shut down the economy for months on end to limit flu numbers, no. But we did COVID. The COVID numbers would be much worse if we hadn't shut down. It's an apples to potatoes comparison.
