There have been far worse periods of civil unrest. The Red Summer of 1919 had 38 incidents of civil unrest. The summer of '68 had 19 incidents of civil unrest, not to mention things that were concurrent, like the May 1968 riots in Paris, RFK was assassinated, the Poor People's March was organized, the Vietnam War, and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
You're letting your nostalgia cloud your judgement too. The 90's was an extremely violent period. The total crime index remained over 5,000 (it's at 2500 now) with violent crime increasing on a per capita basis.
Maybe you were a child and thought things were perfect or something, but that's a myth you've built for yourself.

I was speaking more of the internet and cell phones. You would think technology like that would greatly improve life but it's also had a big negative impact imo.

There’s pros and cons to everything
But having information this fast in the palm of your hand has helped industries far more IMHO
frick with all the WFH going on it could help corporations big time downsize on office space as well

The difference is that there is a 24/7 news cycle and social media telling you a certain “story” that simply isn’t the truth. Murder rates have been on a steady decline since their peak in the ‘90s.
