Looks like a lot of over reactions in here. So the kid got on a bus. Who else was on the bus? A bunch of kids and a bus driver. When the kid is still on the bus at the end of the route they will bring him back. Not a huge deal. It's not like they are pushing kids off the bus into Sandusky's arms if they aren't claimed.

Kids have to have a ticket/tag to be allowed on a bus these days? Or you, the parent, needs a ticket/tag to pick him up? I remember just knowing that bus #7 (or whichever) was the one that took me home.

Has the kid ever taken the bus home before? Seems like you get on the bus and different kids are there, you know something is wrong. The bus doesn't got the right way home, something is wrong. Lots of opportunity for the kid to let the bus driver know something is up.

I got on the wrong bus once...i attribute that somber day to many of the societal challenges I face now. My inability to make friends, my fear of large crowds, being in cities I am unfamiliar with, my premature ejaculation. Don't think I will ever forgive my parents

Yes we have to have a pick up permit on the dash with our kid's name to pick them up from school. I don't think we have buses

It looks like your kid's regular schedule is to be dropped off at aftercare. Did the school know well in advance that you were picking the kid up on the first day?
Did you just show up without a tag? The tag is what keeps your kid safe instead of a pedo just pulling up and saying "I'm Johnny's dad, his mom couldn't make it today."

I'm a new dad, and I can't imagine putting my kid on the bus at this point. I have a hard time dropping him off at daycare. It just takes so much trust, and something like this totally screws that up. I 100% don't want to be an overbearing parent, so I'm going to learn to deal with it. But it is a scary thought for me.
I will admit that I remember getting on the wrong bus in elementary school (probably around 6 years old) once and it wasn't that big of a deal. Luckily the route wasn't far from my actual destination and the driver was able to get me where I needed to go.
