So, insurance companies now send drones to assess your stuff?

A friend's wife told me the insurance company raised their premiums after they sent a drone to their house to assess the total value of their house, shed and other small structures. She said it went as low as head level and took extensive video, which cause the company to raise the total value of their house, thus necessitating a higher level of total coverage.

If even insurance ghouls have this tech, who the hell else is doing stuff like this?

They've been doing this with aerial imagery from companies like EagleView for years. Your tax assessor uses it as well.

Can confirm they've been used for years. My brother is an adjuster and they've used them at least as far back as 2019-20.

Like others have said, this has been a thing for a while. They use google earth images also.

But….

Did it though? Or did her premium increase because the home values in the area increased?

That's actually kinda creepy, but brilliant.

Yes, they send them out often with roofing claims. No more faking hail damage.

She said the higher estimated value was due to the other structures on the property being added to it, but the policy is only supposed to cover the value of the house itself. Eventually, she worked it out with an agent over the phone.

Yea it's being used now in a wide range of industries. I saw tower maintenance workers sending a drone up to the top of the tower to perform work assessment before sending an actual person up there not long ago.

Ah, that sounds valid then. My “other structure” coverage is a percentage of the coverage of my dwelling but sounds like hers was a fixed amount.

Raising values of house per company’s replacement cost estimators is nothing new and has zero to do w their ability to use drone video

She was lied to or misinterpreted what was said

Only the primary structure and attached structures go into coverage A, coverage B other structures is set to a percentage of coverage A (default is 10% but can be adjusted)

Often times you wil see them try to raise coverage A based on there inspection determining and incorrect and higher living square footage, which is fairly easy to dispute or perhaps also maybe they discovered that a structure listed as detached was actually attached (via breezeway or same roof

Sounds like a great thing. Liars won’t be subsidized by honest customers.

Other than square footage, wht would cause a video to raise the estimate?

They should have to make an offer when they do this.

How does me wanting to underinsure my home hurt honest customers? I think I should be able to choose how much insurance I want, especially on a house with no mortgage.

Making up rough numbers but it comes down to this essentially Insurance companies are getting say 35% less premium for say 99% of the same risk. Coinsurance clauses prevent such things.
