Heaven forbid students at a major university in the year 2018 feel that a statue erected over 100 years ago and christened by a sickening white supremacist was distasteful and worthy of removal.
These kids are the future. As time goes on, racism, or tolerance of racism, diminishes. When us middle aged folks were growing up we likely heard our grandparents or parents, maybe aunts or uncles, friends' parents, etc., saying racist shite and we just shrugged our shoulders. We thought it was wrong they were racist but it wasn't anything worth ruining relationships over. Then we had kids. Their racist great-grandparents are dead. Their grandparents may still be a bit racist but most are uncomfortable announcing it. Their parents, you and I, sure as hell don't throw around the N word like we heard growing up.
Because of this slow evolution, statues like this have become pure eyesores and out-of-step with today's kids' belief systems. They want them down and I, for one, completely appreciate us progressing as a society.

There is definitely an argument to be made for the statue's removal. However, there is no argument for it to be forcibly toppled by a mob. That's not how we operate.

Pretty sure you'd just be considered racist

I really can't argue with your point but I can assure you these kids don't care about legal repercussions. They also know that UNC would cause a media shitstorm if they did try to punish them for taking down a symbol of white supremacy. They aren't as dumb as we like to think they are.

Can't totally agree with this.
Riot mentality has to go. If you want change, work for it within the system. It may take a bit more time, but you followed the proper channels.
This just breeds more hate and signals to people that taking the law into your own hands is approved. Someone is going to get hurt and then everyone will wonder why.

There's a lot of pissed off white people in this thread

As a UNC alum, I hope swift punishment for the vandals. Destroying property because you disagree with how you interpret something without truly engaging in dialogue between the opposing party is what happened here. Closing your ears and not allowing for an open engagement is not the way resolution happens. The monument, ironically, was a testament to that.
I am not a white knight for Confederate monuments, but I am against vandalism, and group think vigilantism.

If you believe I meant literally three, you are lying or mentally handicapped. Racism is MUCH less of a problem today than even twenty years ago, at least from your stereotypical source—white people against black/brown people. If it has increased, racism now predominately comes from white and black/brown people against white people.
To the extent white people are still heavily racist in the classic way, it does not manifest itself in tangible ways, at least not nearly to the degree it used to actually do so in, for example, the ‘50s.

UNC should have intervened before it got to the point of them toppling the statue. It's obvious that this was an unruly mob from the beginning.

Sweet PC Principal shtick. It was subtle, but the "I, for one" gave you away.

probably more brave than erecting a civil war statue in 19 fricking 13.
So you were alive in 1913 and can comment on the climate of life at that time? Way to show your ignorance by placing the "norms" (as ridiculous as they may be) of 2018 on 1913.
