Actually did not know this.... thanks! I am not planning to be in this situation anytime soon... but still good to know. Had no idea this was available.

My guy is about to be 12 but hes in great health. What is a mindfrick to me is knowing that one of these next 600 days he is likely to take a downward turn. Hes been my best buddy for his entire life- from NO to Milwaukee now to Oregon. We spoil him and walk him and keep him as happy and involved as we can. Anybody have advice for how to stop dreading when he start to go downhill?

At a personal level I do struggle with that part of the job. Euthanasia is sometimes the human option that remains but it is never easy for me.

Anyway the people who bother me are not the ones who don't want to be there for the last moment. I think some of them will have regrets and guilt but I understand they are struggling with the anguish of the moment.

The people who bother me are the ones who don't seem to care at all.

I put my Weimaraner down 5 or so years ago. I did it myself. The hardest thing I’ve ever done. It affected me for a long time. I’ll never do that again. My dog now, when his time comes, will be taken to the vet. And I’ll be in the room with him. Damn, this thread is rough.

They asked me that question when i had to put my ole dog down and i told them hell yeah i want to be in there. One of the saddest moments in my life but i was there with him when he passed. how can you not be there? when basically your saying goodbye to a family member.

I have been there holding my pet whenever this has happened. I can't really imagine not being there. I had a neighbor who casually told me he had just taken his dog to have it put down and was waiting on the call that it was done.

I'm not wired that way. Yes, it's a dog, but I could never drop it off and walk away in that situation.

Me either.

We had to put our dog down 2 weeks ago and it was a painful decision. She had been a wonderful part of our family for almost 13 years.

I took her to the vet and then I held her and talked to her and cried with her until she was gone. My wife and kids stayed home because they could not do that.

I could not imagine our little pup being alone in her final moments. I owed her that much.

Many years ago on a deployment my dog had to be put down. I had to listen on the phone since the internet wasn’t really working in the MWR. One of the last things he did was lick the phone while I talked.

That sucked.

I’ve been with both of mine the last 4 years. It sucked when I put my 15 year old lab down but I thought the actual injection was better than the day and time leading up to it. Just held her and knew she wasn’t hurting. My dog was with me from junior year at LSU through moving to Florida, meeting my wife, moving to 6 states together, and the birth of 2 of our 3 kids. I couldn’t imagine not being with her for that.

I have been present for both of mine and were holding them when they passed.

Never cried so hard in my life.

Wow. Way to put me in a pissed off mood so early on a Friday morning. I usually don’t get pissed off until about 11.

I was in the room when my long term gf at the time put down her childhood cat. That was even tough for me and I had little to no relationship with it
