I remember coming down the road at our old house and one of our neighbors who lived closer to the top.of the road was standing in the middle.of the street holding a good 4.5-5ft.long Copperhead.

Cool video. I wish his camera was rolling when that guy came out of the woods on him at night. I bet that scared the crap out of him. Haha.

Dangerous wildlife, then there are the poisonous snakes now. I'll just stay away until only the snakes remain.

I think me and Murphy's pond have a wonderful relationship. They obviously don't want me there....and I sure as hell don't want to be there.

The most I’ve seen in one area was 26 one day in Golden Meadow at a cypress swamp area.

People think they are territorial, but they’ll congregate in areas. Here are 2 basking together…

…and 3 in this pic ( both photos from the Golden Meadow trip).

The most I’ve found in one trip on the creek behind my house is 12 or 13. A typical walk down my creek is 6-8 cottons. Here’s a pic of one swimming over another’s back (and there was another along the bank less than 10 feet away from those 2).

Here’s my biggest two:

Beautiful creatures!

ETA: In the past 2 1/2 years since I moved to Folsom, I’ve caught 75 out of 197 cottonmouths I’ve seen.

People say you can smell a cottonmouth, do you find that to be true?

Not at all. They can musk like other snakes, but tend to do it far less frequently than many other snakes. Of the 75 I’ve caught, maybe 5 have musked me. Even when I’m holding them in my hands, I usually don’t smell anything.

Damn ! I guess I am lucky. I haven’t seen a snake in over 20 years and I live in Gonzales. I fear snakes too.

Ever been to Spanish Lake near New Iberia? Haven't been out there in awhile, but, at one time, snakes everywhere...

If you know where to look for them, you can find them in numbers. Most people just don’t look for them. Even most herpers don’t target them.
