I love all the shitting Boomers do on younger generations However Gen Z grew up in a time where the internet is not only mainstream the internet is as pervasive and accessible as running water. Kids these days get an iPad shoved in their face the minute they start fussing. Deconnecting like this is actually a pretty deliberate task for them to do.

My daughter is in her plebe year at the Naval Academy. First thing they do is take away their phones and they don’t get them back for six weeks. After about day two, I pictured 1200 plebes in various stages of withdrawal.

I think this is a big part of the problem of why some people always say "just suck it up" when it comes to anxiety. Clinical anxiety is a very real and scary condition. Using "my anxiety" (likely in a self diagnosed setting) as an excuse for everything makes people with actual clinical anxiety not get taken seriously.

There are certainly grades of anxiety, but I think you are discounting just how widespread generalized anxiety disorder has become due to incessant, life-long stimulation. Our brains aren’t built for it, and it’s doing people real harm.

“And at first I was like f**k no, my anxiety could never – which is probably what you’re thinking – but something within me was like let me just try it.” Maio said the first two minutes of her walk were “mayhem”, until she hit a “flow state”, when “suddenly you can … hear yourself.”

fricking Zoomers are so fricking over the top about everything. Hyperbole is too small a word to describe it.

A walk without a phone is “mayhem” until you hit your “flow state”. Go frick yourself you pretentious baby in an adults body.

You’re simply objecting to the framing. I’ve spoken to many people who claim that there’s no way they can meditate because “they think too much and can’t think of nothing”.

It’s the exact same thing worded differently.

Thats exactly what he said.

Its mundane, has occurred for thousands of years, Zoomers just think they discovered it.

I guess I just don’t get it. I have a normal 25 year old son and a normal 20 year old daughter. They are well rounded people that had well rounded childhoods. I do agree that the parents shoulder a lot of blame for these adult children that “I can’t even” because of letting electronics raise them. Eventually though they will have to grow up or real life will beat the shite out of them.

You are right because the framing is still over the top look at me I have “anxiety” and was able to go for a walk without my phone Yay me!! It’s so stupid. Real anxiety are the people working two jobs to hopefully keep their kids fed with a roof over their head.

It's because this generation feels the need to be unique and nuanced over everything. Each person is a carefully curated checklist of personality points and they cling to it.

They will. Or they won’t and society will collapse

I would just be genuinely surprised to see it be the latter.

The human brain is a marvelous engine at filling the space given to it. Crawl into the brain of every single person and every one of them believes they are busy, stressed, etc, etc.

Does the brain surgeon have a different kind of stress than the kid being gossiped about at school? Of course. Does the brain treat them differently. No, no it does not.

It’s a flaw in our wiring.

It is hilarious how they brag about it like it’s some big accomplishment that I’m setting my phone down

That’s awesome. Disconnecting and being alone with your own thoughts is completely foreign to most of them. I hope this one really holds true.

I don’t disagree with that. The issue I have is the younger generation and some older attention whores that feel the need to tell the world about the mundane task they accomplished in spite of the “anxiety” caused by not having their phone. It’s counter productive because it makes the person come across as a self centered douche. Good for you, you went for a walk now shut up about it.

It really is something that this generation needs to hear. The ability to disconnect from distractions and listen to your own thoughts is very powerful.
