That’s awesome. Disconnecting and being alone with your own thoughts is completely foreign to most of them. I hope this one really holds true.
Completely foreign to most people at this point. No matter the age of the person I’m talking to, I always get utter shock and disbelief that I frequently drive without anything (music, podcast, audiobook, etc) “on”.

I don’t disagree with that. The issue I have is the younger generation and some older attention whores that feel the need to tell the world about the mundane task they accomplished in spite of the “anxiety” caused by not having their phone. It’s counter productive because it makes the person come across as a self centered douche. Good for you, you went for a walk now shut up about it.
I think the disconnect we are having is that we are reading what she conveyed differently. While you read it as the above, I read it as “I thought taking a walk in silence was going to be awful because I wouldn’t be able to shut down my brain without a distraction, but I ended up really enjoying it”, with no implication that the idea of going on a walk, in and of itself, was in any way scary or anxiety inducing.
Eta: Not saying my interpretation is the correct one; I’m simply pointing out what I perceive to be the difference.

This can be dangerous too. I’ve found myself so deep in thought that I’ve snapped to and went holy shite where did the last 5 miles go

In those moments I very much appreciate whoever developed adaptive cruise control

I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. The need for attention (even from strangers) is so strong in the young ones it has to be at least a partial driving factor in it.

So did these intrepid youngsters just redefine an ancient human behavior known as "walking" as something new?
Yes.

I don’t disagree. Though I’ll say that my perception is that the need for attention is strong in humans in general. There’s a reason my FB feed is cluttered with middle aged people. The difference with “young” people is that this is all they have ever known, so it’s normalized to them. I’m in my mid to late 30s and the idea of broadcasting details of my life to people on social media isn’t just foreign to me; it’s unpleasant. But I didn’t have access to social media until I fed my LSU email address into FB back when it was only for college students. Kids growing up now think it’s normal to have the world at large not only know, but react to, everything you do and think. That’s not really their fault, though. They just happened to be the first generation to not remember a world before social media. Sucks for them, in my opinion. I think the generation that comes after them will likely have a healthier relationship with social media and the internet in general.
Or we’re headed towards Blade Runner or Neuromancer or A Brave New World or whatever is one’s dystopia of choice

"everything showers”
I don't understand this one exactly but it is taking long showers where you do all the self care stuff at one time.

This is where you stay on bed and watch TV etc to veg out. The general concept whether they realize it or not is why so many here want a dark mode for TD.

It amazes me how my Boomer Generation raised such a bunch of pampered pussies. We really screwed the pooch.

I love all the shitting Boomers do on younger generations
However Gen Z grew up in a time where the internet is not only mainstream the internet is as pervasive and accessible as running water.
Kids these days get an iPad shoved in their face the minute they start fussing.
Deconnecting like this is actually a pretty deliberate task for them to do.
This is my thought as well. Good for them to get away from technology. It’s too much these days. Want to take a week’s vacation with your family? Jokes on you. Better answer those emails buzzing through onto your cellphone. It does not stop.

You are right because the framing is still over the top look at me I have “anxiety” and was able to go for a walk without my phone
I feel extremely confident that the vast majority of teenagers can go for a walk without their phones and be perfectly fine. There are retards like person in OP, but there are people in their 50s and 60s that act ridiculous about stuff like this also. Was waiting for a table at restaurant to open with wife a few weeks ago. There was a table of maybe 6 adults and 4 young teenage girls. The young girls were actually talking to each other, every adult was sitting there looking at their phones. Adults are probably more embarrassing about it then kids

You have almost 26K posts on a sports message board. Yeah, you're a real wallflower!

Sure, walking has been around since our species became bipedal. But leaving your phone at home on purpose has really only been around as of late.
but I find it baffling how the younger generations keep inventing things that have existed for a long time

I remember when it was just called "walking"

Never claimed to be a wallflower. I said that I generally don’t broadcast details of my life to people on social media.
Reading comprehension not really your thing?

I cannot disagree with this.
I guess my disconnect is my kids didn’t have phones till they started traveling to away games in sports (14 or so). They didn’t have social media till 16 or so. We did all kinds of stuff as a family and they both were really involved in sports and academic groups which caused them to be social with people in person. I’m coming around to thinking these kids were socially stunted because their parents failed them. We also live in a rural area so that probably has a good bit to do with it also.

I am 50+ years old. It is a pretty deliberate task for me to do so as well. I literally bought an Apple watch to be able to leave the phone at home at times, knowing I would at least only be able to grab a call if it were important enough without being tempted to make one.
Not to shite on Gen Z, but we fought something similar with Walkmans being used to check out. We just didn't have the internet to tell everyone about that "struggle" (and others). And that was a good thing in a lot of ways.
