I thought they were deported from France once again by the Brits? Some dispersed through the colonies, a lot went back to France, but then we're deported again.

Well I guess I stand corrected.

I've always seen people use "Creole" to reference certain people of mixed race.

Not necessarily. While a lot of French creoles in New Orleans and Haiti fathered children with blacks, doing so was not a requirement to be considered creole. It was just really common.

Creoles are the descendants of Catholic French and Spanish settlers who came straight from France (or by way of French Haiti) or Spain (NOT via Canary Islands) to Louisiana. While a lot of them intermarried or fathered children with blacks, it wasn't a requirement.

If your family came from France prior to the Louisiana purchase, you're Creole.

If you came prior to the Louisiana Purchase to Louisiana from Canada, but a few generations before that came to Canada from France, you're Cajun.

If you came to Louisiana from the Canary Islands before the Louisiana Purchase, you're Islano.

Interesting, the more you know, I guess

Apparently, I'm both Cajun and Creole, I typically just say half of my family is Cajun, and half came here directly from France.
