We have a really nice mall in my town that I visit a few times a year when I get a craving for food court chinese food. My mall also has a Bigotes Street Tacos that sells alcohol so I’ll grab a margarita for the wife and I’ll get myself a pint of modelo then proceed to hit up Bath and Body Works.

Side note: they just had a buy 2 get 2 free sale and we stocked up on hand soaps, wallflower scents and a dozen candles.

Shopping malls in metro Atlanta are thriving like I haven't seen since the 90s. Lots of rich black people love malls though so we might have an advantage over other cities because we are the black mecca capital of the universe lol but they are always cool and very friendly to shop next to

Other than tshirts I don’t get buying clothes online. I’d assume you’d want to see it, feel it, make sure it fits etc

Presuming you're a man, you like the "shopping" experience? How you got any upvotes is beyond me.

Online shopping has only gotten better (I got measured for glasses with my phone, an app and a tape measure up against my face, for instance.) In person is only for picking TVs and groceries.

No idea how the wife missed that sale.

The Village in Boise is a great mall. And there is a Popeye's there that is pretty good (efficiently run, if you can believe it).

I remember an English writer saying in the '80s that malls were significant b/c they were the first public space dominated by teenage girls.

Now they are dominated by [r e d a c t e d]

I feel like the mall was part of growing up. It was probably the first time many people bought something on their own. You go with your parents, you go look at one store while they look at another, you have a few bucks in your wallet burning your pocket.

When I was a teenager, when we went out in Baton Rouge (I was 25 miles south of baton rouge so going to BR wasn't a daily thing, but we went there for a lot of things) we always went to the mall first. Whether it was to buy a CD or someone wanted a new hat, etc. And if it was 4 or 5 of us, someone always seen someone they knew and you meet them and that could lead to meeting other people. I really do feel like malls were important socially.

I loved West Oaks Mall in Houston

That area turning to shite was its downfall. Katy Mills was the nail in the coffin.
Memorial City is thriving and always has a number of LEO on the premises. Seems that has pushed a lot of the usual riff-raff down the highway to City Center.

I’m a little autistic when it comes to clothes. I find a brand and product that I want and that’s what I wear until it’s out of production basically. Especially for work clothes. But it’s getting harder and harder to do that. I’ll find a shirt I like and a month later it’s not being made anymore. Jeans are the worst.

For the last 10 years or so I’ve been coasting on what I’ve already had and just replacing it. Can’t find them anymore so I’m unfortunately having to go into stores and actually try on clothes.

Now dress clothes I’ve always wanted to do that in person.

Outdoor shopping complexes appear to be popular, but I don’t see indoor malls doing well. The last time I was in an indoor mall was when googlemaps took me to the one in Alexandria, Louisiana when I was passing through and looking for a Chick-fil-A. It was basically empty of operating stores with the exception of a few places in the food court. There was literally a guy in the mail walking his two pit bulls. They were well behaved but it made me a little uneasy at first sight.

Just think if Amazon started opening up full size department stores in every large mall and smaller catalog stores in smaller markets.

I could see them being the next coming of Sears.

My heart broke when they closed Rose's store in Eunice, LA.

That's where my Boo loved to shop.

They’ve never really died where white people live. It’s just where there are too many baggy pantsed non shoppers.

This is pleasant news. However, there is a lot of ground to make up. At the peak of the "golden age" of shopping malls in 1990, there were roughly 2,000 of them scattered across the United States. Now there may be as few as 700 here in 2026.
I think this partly may be way they’re “making a comeback.” There were way too many of them. For example we had two like 5 or so miles from each other on the same stretch of highway in Wichita. There was really no need for that. One of the two shut down last year and the other one is thriving.

Half of the smaller city’s that had/have malls probably didn’t/don’t need them.

It’s been long enough that people have forgotten the reason they abandoned shopping malls in the first place. The darkness will return.
