KATC article

Does this make Lafayette the largest non-sanctuary city in Louisiana?

I wonder how many ICE trips are made to Lafayette jails...

I heard it's because they'd rather go back to Mexico than stay in Lafayette

Didn't the city council and mayor already decide they are?

different jurisdictions

the mayor/city can't tell the sheriff what to do with his LEO/jail. that's his jurisdiction

Sheriffs are some of the most powerful people in the state anywhere you go. A city council can’t tell a sheriff how to execute his duties to the county/parish.

The sheriff is the most powerful elected official below the governor in this state. He can tell the city/parish to go get fricked. He's elected, has the power of arrest, and is the tax collector.

It requires the governor and his powers, a recall election, or the feds to stop a sheriff in his own parish.

Yes. I remember learning this in Judicial Politics at LSU. Sheriff can seize property and auction it.

Being Sheriff has to be the best local government position. More powerful than mayor and you get police powers.
