If you mean number of deaths, I’m sure you’re correct. But that’s because H2S is common in the oil & gas industry, which is a LOT bigger than the MDI industry. It’s just a matter of scale.

Also, a lot of H2S deaths occur due to poorly-managed confined space entries in equally poorly-regulated countries, or to folks not working in industry (sewers, especially).

But in reality you’re right - dead is dead. Also frick HF alky units. That shite scares me more than anything.

It is crazy because talking to the guys at Honeywell who make the HF they aren't near as afraid as HF alky people.

Guess numbness to the danger or just a strong grasp on the control.

But I don’t think She’ll Norco has an HF alky unit,

No HF at Shell Norco. I don't know of anyone being hurt by H2S at Norco in the past 8 years. Most injuries at Norco are hand injuries or tripping and falling. Very few injuries from chemical exposure.

Idk about Rubicon but a family member is pretty high up their pecking order and they have really good benefits.

My dad worked for over 20 years at Rubicon until my mom’s job got relocated. He would never say it but he started to hate it over there and my mom’s job transfer was a way to get out

I work as an operator in Geismar. Run to Shell instead of Rubicon. You're welcome.

Shell my father retired from Royal Dutch where he started in Operations. He had the ability even after retirement to come back as a contract worker to help on turnarounds on jobs worldwide.

Shell Norco, on the other hand is an Ethylene plant and refinery. Much safer.

You must be too young to remember 1988.

NORCO runs sweet crude so only trace amounts of H2S. Convent runs sour crude where it is expected to have H2S.

Exxon would be a better option than both...

Sweet crude still has plenty of H2S in some of the streams. Impossible to escape in crude distillation.

Depends. Do your prefer Benzene or Phosgene?

My grandfather worked at Shell Norco for over 30 yrs.. by the time he retired, his body was ravaged by several types as cancer, most likely from the constant exposure to asbestos and benzene he experienced every day.. hopefully plants in general are safer these days, but if they calculate that it affects their bottom line too much, then they’ll say whatever they have to say and cut corners wherever they can.
