A better metric is education. More highly educated people have fewer children than lower educated people.

It’s not a knock, just a fact and a byproduct of more schooling. The time invested in education means less likely to have kids from a financial stand point at a younger age.

It’s another ism - narcissism.

Raising a child and especially children means you have to sacrifice something of yourself, your time, and your money. Brunch Saturdays and Sundays tend to disappear.

Today’s modern woman doesn’t have the capacity to be focused on anything but self.

Even if you equalize for education, conservatives have more kids

The issue is that people who need to stop having kids will not stop having kids.

You don't have to mass import sub 80 iq muslims/ africans to bolster the economy, china has millions of smart young people without behavioral issues

Well, mass importing 120 iq Chinese nationals to take all of the white collar jobs so Americans can do lesser paying jobs, while those Chinese nationals prop up the CCP by sending dollars back home to mom and dad could make us worse off in the long term.

How about we start having more American babies so we don’t have to try to solve for this.

This is absolutely untrue. Society needs children, lots of them

If your culture decides not to have them the demand for children will be met by someone else

It's not wrong to say raising children to become apart of the upper class or middle class is more costly than it once was.

Educated people think further ahead and have a better understanding of all the inputs required to help their kid develop to occupy a higher class, and when they cannot meet that standard, they defer.

Poorer people don't give a shite and have kids with no long term outlook at all.

Everything costs. Private tutoring, good schools, homes, the latest gadgets, the best colleges, vehicles, camps, etc.

The minimum living costs of an upper middle class kid are infinitely higher than a few decades ago and those costs are rising.

The upper class stays upper class because they spend copious amounts of money on training development and access to opportunities. When they're no longer capable of those inputs, they miss out.

Here I am wanting kids with my wife and we have tried over a year with no luck. Been doing inseminations at a fertility clinic and of course the natural way. Family planning, all of it. Only thing we haven’t tried is IVF but it’s like 30k per try and don’t have the extra funds at the moment

There’s nothing wrong with either of us fertility wise but it just won’t happen. And we don’t have several years to keep trying with our age.

Sure, you don’t have to, but do you think we’re just going to stop doing so?

And let’s not forget Central America!

LMAO at those who think there’s a trace of the political will that’s necessary to change the situation.

Having kids hasn’t been that expensive EXCEPT for childcare. We are around $35,000 a year for daycare. Feeding, clothing, activities, etc are not really the problem.

No they haven’t.

In fact, it's the people in the lower 4th or so of the financial structure who are still having children.

Damn, luckily that's usually only 4-5 years unless you send them to private school afterwards. Then they are really expensive again from 15-22 or so.

My wife and I talk about having kids, but it's just too expensive.

We aren't blaming anyone for it. We got late starts in life, I didn't go back to school to get a better job until I was 28. HHI this year will be right at $100K, but I'm not having a kid and putting them into the public school system here. There are so many moments in my life that I could have made a different decision and I might currently be strung out or in jail, most of those decisions coming during middle school and high school.

But it's just too expensive to afford medical care, afford child care, send kids to private school, save for retirement, and live in a nice house.

Again, not complaining. We are early-mid 30s, so if it doesn't happen soon it probably won't. We are okay with that. I'd rather be comfortable with my wife than uncomfortable with a family I can't support the way I would like.

the world isn't disney. i know so many dysfunctional parents who neglect/ignore their children.

my wife is a super-caring person and if any boy or girl that fits this bill is visiting/spending the night with our little boy, they get attention, food, she makes sure they take a bath before bed, often she's cutting their hair (she's a master barber), lending/giving them clothes...

its all intrinsic. she's not doing it for 'likes' or anything else. its just part of who she is.

i feel like a ... "cad" compared to her at how much she is aware of our surroundings including neighbors, friends, etc. we're just wired differently but i love everything about who she is and i wouldn't change it.
