Grand Isle/Fourchon Beach big wave surfing finally gets some competition from Mavericks Beach

At Mavericks Beach near Half Moon Bay, 50-foot waves were recorded Monday, leading the World Surf League to postpone the annual Mavericks Surf Competition.

When I was a lot younger and traveling on a road trip up the west coast we made a pilgrimage to Half Moon Bay and Mavericks was flat as a pancake. I was really disappointed but it's a pretty cool area to visit nonetheless.

takes a certain set of conditions to set off Mavericks. plus you have to swim out about a half mile to get to the break. its pretty awesome when its going off though.

I surfed a little in fair size waves.
These guys are riding monster size waves.
It takes a lot of skill to do that.
