Dungeons and Dragons was one of my faves. Also I would get up at 6 to start the day off with Rocky and Bullwinkle, then Spider-Man and Friends, then me and my sis would trade watching our shows till noon. She loved shows like Rainbow Bright, Pound Puppy’s, My little Pony, and Care Bears. I loved things like Robotec, Voltron, X-Men, D & D, Thundaar, Transformers, Flash Gordon, Looney Tunes, etc…

Gosh, those were the best days…

I’m a kid of the 70’s so these aren’t in any particular order

1.Scooby Doo where are You
2. Super Friends
3. Johnny Quest
4. Space Ghost
5. Herculoids
6. Land of the Lost
7. Star Trek the Animated Series
8. Tarzan Lord of the Jungle
9. Shazam / Isis Hour
10. Jason of Star Command / Space Academy
11. Ark II
12. Return to the Planet of the Apes
13. Hong Kong Phooey
14. Josie and the Pussy Cats
15. Jabber Jaws
16. The New Adventures of Batman
17. Flintstones
18. Jetsons
19. Fantastic Four
20. Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends
21. School House Rock
22. Grape Ape
23. Speed Buggy
24. Captain Caveman
25. Bugs Bunny
26. Groovie Goulies
27. Valley of the Dinosaurs
28. Danger Island
29. Laff-A-Lympics
30. Yogi’s Space Race
31. Flash Gordon
32.Krofft Supershow
33. Dynomut
34. Godzilla

I know I’ve missed a few but that’s what I can remember off the top of my head. They would also combine an old and maybe a new show to give you an hour of something. I remember Tarzan and Batman being combined into an hour show and later the Lone Ranger was added as well. Space Ghost was added to others as well as the Herculoids.

I remember they would show snippets of the cartoons on specials that ran the Friday before the new season aired.

If you collected comics during the seventies they would run adds in them for Saturday mornings as well.

Saturdays were also never complete without adding American Band Stand and Soul Train to the mix just after the toons went off.

Saturday mornings were for kids and I sure have a lot of great memories.

I vividly recall my brother and I sitting down with paper and pencil on a Friday night, looking through Saturday morning’s TV listings, and making a schedule of the cartoons we’d watch together. What a time to be alive…

We'd wake up early to catch Ernest P Worrell, then PeeWee's Playhouse, then Garfield and Friends (underrated show). Good times.

I remember flipping over to NBC the day they cancelled Saturday morning cartoons for Today. I was so indignant.

Same. And that made me remember having full on grudge wrestling matches over the remote in total silence so we wouldn't wake our parents.

I watched the usual stuff, but I was also a fan of things like The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, and Robotech. Spartakus was on really early, like 4:30 or 5:00, so my older sister and I had to sneak down the stairs to the big wooden Zenith box to watch it.

Pretty sure I watched Saturday morning cartoons through the 90s

Cable and independent TV stations continued airing cartoons on syndication or as original series on Nickelodeon. Also Fox continued having cartoons till the early 2000’s. They even had a M-F children’s cartoon block that some affiliates aired or let other stations in the market air depending on news output since the newer VHF affiliates coming on after the NFL switch had early morning newscasts. The WB also ran some original cartoons like Pinky and the Brain and a few others.

What killed the cartoons on networks were new FCC requirements on children’s programming that needed to be more educational and informative and commercial limits on number of spots and targeting to children. One program that rose from this was Bill Nye the “crooked” Science Guy.

We'd pull up a rug and a pillow on the tile floor, cover with a blanket, turn the channels manually, sprinkle some extra sugar on our frosted flakes, and enjoy the cartoons.

Sunday mornings were Japanese monster movies and space adventures. Depending on what time we went to mass, wed miss the end of a lot of movies.

Hooooooooooooo!

Of course, those were in the afternoon.

Saturday mornings went to shite when they stopped with Bugs and the Roadrunner. Those and the Hanna-Barbera offerings were what Saturday mornings were all about.

In my childhood in the 60's, it was Space Ghost, The Herculoids, and Johnny Quest. I didn't budge until American Bandstand came on and if one of the guests looked interesting I'd hang around for that as well. Lord but life was so much simpler (I didn't say better) then and I miss it terribly.

I remember once per year at the end of summer each network would run a special telling what shows will be on each night at primetime and then they would review their cartoon line up for Saturday. Me and my friends would sit and plan which shows we would watch that year. It was awesome. And after school was always the Brady bunch followed by the flintstones. Not sure why the Brady bunch did so well as old as it was but everyone watched it.

Imagine if you had to go back in time to my grandparents... Who raised two kids in the great Depression, Were both in their mid 30's during WWII.. ANd you had to tell them about the USA today...
