Did you get out your change purse and count out pennies too?

Automation is going to start really hurting the regular everyman. We're going to have a lot of jobless and skilless people in the next decade. Cashiers, call center workers, truckers, and other low-level jobs are going. Even kitchen staffs and bartenders will eventually be replaced by robots. It started in factories and we ignored it, now all across the Midwest there are millions of jobs automated away. It's only going to progress.

Did you make this same argument when the Internet was in its infant stages? What about when the PC was invented? What about switchboard operators, milkmen, icemen, lamp lighters, the list can go on forever.

Technology changes and people adapt their skills to meet the needs of the market. It's the cornerstone of capitalism.

I love self-checkouts, because I’m usually only grabbing a bag or two of items. I can knock out 10-15 items in no time, and be on my way.

What I can’t stand is people who take a cart full of groceries to the self-checkout. And they always take 30 minutes and require help to figure it out.

Few items = self checkout
Bunch of items = regular line

It's weird because I'm extremely anti-social, but I hate self checkout because I miss the mundane and brief human interaction with the cashier. Maybe it's because I was cashier at a grocery store in high school? I don't know, but I rarely use self-checkout.

Every single person I’ve ever met? But I’ve never met anybody from Missouri as far as I know. I don’t really hang out with Yankees very much.

I hate Walmart and try to never enter. When I do find myself there, I usually end up in the self checkout line. My problem is that many times the damn thing malfunctions and displays an error code/wait for associate message. Then you have to wait for the sloth in the blue vest to reset your screen.

This happens at Target too, but not nearly as often. They usually have someone nearby ready to help.

I credit Target's superior efficiency to the fact that there's often a CFA nearby.

This is what i came here to post.. Ostensibly, the food you are buying has labor costs built into the overall cost of the food.. so if i am saving them on labor costs, by checking and bagging the groceries myself- then why in the hell isnt that savings being passed on to me?

There are so many people’s salaries that are built into the cost of food...from the farmer to the truck drivers to the forklift drivers, distribution center laborers, store level laborers, management to line these people up. Not to mention general overhead like air conditioning the building, fuel for the trucks, janitors who wax the floor at night, and many, many more.

And the cashier might get paid less than any of them. The cashier is such an infinitesimal part of the overall price you pay.

Plus it’s really no more work than if you went to a cashier. Even at a cashier you’d have to pick the item up and put it onto the belt. With self checkout you pretty much just put it straight into the bag except you pass it over the scanner on the way. I also like to bag my own items because I can put everything that needs to go to the bathroom in one bag, kitchen stuff in one bag, food in one bag

Brought my buggy full of groceries (probably around 30 items) and started scanning. After a few items, had 4-5 people in line. I could tell they were getting annoyed waiting. So I started to take my sweet arse time. Sorry, but I won’t feel pressured to ring myself up quickly at a place I don’t work at. Should hire more employees to make shopping a more enjoyable experience

100% agree with the bagging issue. I want all my cold foods together so when I get home I can stand in front of the fridge and put them away. I don't want my ham in the same bag as my toilet cleaner.

I always bag my own groceries for the same reasons. Plus it makes things go faster at check out.

You sound like you're upset that they didn't hire you

This, although it mostly depends on the lines either way. If I have a full cart, which for me is usually 30-40 items, and all the regular lines have people waiting and the self-checkout area has openings, then I'm going for self-checkout.

Or if I only have a few things and there is a regular line with no wait, I'll do that.

I enjoy self checkout, I can get in and out without speaking to anyone.

People that complain about "I don't work here, I'm not doing that" are usually mouth breathing poors.

gotta love how the automate everything which means way less overhead for the corporations, yet nothing EVER gets cheaper to the consumer. it's actually complete bullshite

and boomers are DUMBFOUNDED as to why young people are becoming less-than-enamored with capitalism. surely it must be because they are lazy bums and no other discernible reason
