I think the importance of this will be lost on a lot of people. We've all seen "pictures" of black holes, but they have all been artifical creations based on what we think they would/should look like.

While I kind of agree with you, it is also not that big of a deal.
5 TB of data and we get a fuzzy picture of something 55 million light years away. That distance is beyond human comprehension.
I am very pro-space, but money spent on this is a waste for human advancement. We know there are black holes and we know how they work. Let us now put money in getting humans further into space and not care about something that is 3,233,244,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles from Earth
