The movie Interstellar had several astro-physicists part of production to help visualize a black hole.
That's my understanding. We know a good deal about black holes, but there's also a good deal we don't know about black holes. Physicists have many differing theories and ideas about the parts we're not so sure of.
So, to better understand the physics, they made millions of computer models, each of them with different physics models, and let the models predict what the black hole would look like. Then they pointed the telescopes at two objects that we are confident are black holes and took pictures of them. Then they compared the actual data of the known black hole to the simulations they made and picked out the simulation results that were closest to what the scientists actually saw.
Out of those millions of simulations, only a relatively small handful came out that closely matched the actual observation. From that handful, the scientists can investigate the physics models of each simulation and compare how well the models agree with each other and how well they agree with what we think the physics of black holes is. More importantly, the scientists can look at those successful models and if they all agree with each other on something we just guessed at or agree with each other but disagree with what physicists think they know, that likely points to a fruitful avenue of research so that dollars and effort can be better focused on those 'Hmm. That's neat.' parts of the physics models to try to avoid dead end research.

Also, there is a distance, extremely far out from the blackhole and accretion disk itself, from which a spaceship would not be able to escape, so it would be very long trip to getting destroyed. So we'll definitely want to steer clear of even the neighborhood of black holes when we're traveling to the other side of the galaxy or another galaxy. Just wanted to put that out there.
