So it took them 2 years to find the image in all that data?
How do they know which is the right one? How do they know there aren't more images?

Reading up on the properties of a supermassive blackhole, specifically M87, is absolutely mind blowing when you can get a perspective of it's ring of influence.
For starters, M87 is a good bit larger than Sgr A*(SBH at the center of our galaxy). For your average stellar black hole, they are something like 10 sun masses, with an event horizon that extends about 20-30km outward.
M87 is roughly the mass of 6 billion of our suns, and its event horizon is ~18,000,000,000km. This event horizon reaches out 4 times the distance of our entire solar system, and crossing it even at this distance is the point of no return.

Amazing pic. Keep in mind what we took a pic of is the effects of an extremely tiny point. The accretion disk, the radius out to the event horizon, those are just effects of that extremely tiny rip in space.

Judging by the advancement of these photos of Pluto, I guess we'll all have to sit back and wait 25 years to we get really impressive images of a black hole.

I'm at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, and was able to visit with an organization working behind the scenes at NASA and in coordination with JPL on the research image of the black hole.
I received a confidential view of the image that takes a deeper dive into the image than was presented publicly. These images may or may not make it out, but what I can tell you is that the data for the image you've seen was processed to reveal over 16,000 layers of data, revealing significant structural details of the black hole, including deep into it past the event horizon. I was not allowed to take any photos of the images, as they are being copywrited before released to NASA. The technology used to bring out the detail is new and evolved from the experience of over a 1000 years of scientific background by the scientists that developed it.
To give you an indication how good this technology is, imagine someone firing a pistol in a crowd of 25,000 at a concert or sporting event. This technology could pinpoint that person by scanning the crowd and locating the signature of gunpowder residue in the data in about two seconds. It looks beyond the visible data to underlying building blocks that create the data. It's really remarkable. I hope these images become available, soon. They are truly remarkable.
