I don't understand why these socialists hate the police so much. When studying history did they all skip the part that after the revolution is complete you are required to set up a national security police state to maintain the utopia?

Mental illness is a problem all around for law enforcement. The truth is, it really shouldn't be. State and local governments have slashed mental health budgets to embarrassingly low levels. They've closed state funded mental hospitals and clinics making it nearly impossible for people to get help. All it has done is place the burden on local police departments. People who need legitimate help are booked into jail where they are loosely monitored by an overworked and underpaid counselor, or if they are lucky, a psychiatrist who is likely not that great at their practice. Jailers, not trained staff, become responsible for the day-to-day care of these people, and they aren't exactly doctors, either. There is no goal of actually helping these people in jails. They are just babysitting them, and hoping like hell nothing happens to them or because of them. They will ride out their time in jail waiting on a bed to open up at a privately owned mental facility, if they are lucky enough to qualify for one.
Mentally ill people who find themselves injured or killed during police encounters rarely get to that point over night. They are often frequent fliers who the police know and have dealt with. The system has failed many of these people, placing them and the officer on a path to potential disaster.
