They were stunned that the drugs they gave them didn't just stall the aging process, but reversed it. They say not to get too excited just yet, however, as there were only 9 subjects and no control group. However...the body's aging process was reversed by an average of 2.5 years in the study.

That's incredibly interesting but I'll wait til that decimal moves to the right one spot. To have the metabolism and hair I did when I was 25...

If this study can be replicated, it will eventually happen. Baby steps. The first car's top speed was a meager 7 MPH. 130 years later, the fastest mainstream vehicles can surpass 250 MPH.

how are they objectively measuring aging? this is dumb. Did they measure the brain and all other organs separately?

I've often wondered if the process of aging and death is not a preferred genetic trait.

How so? The earth, contrary to popular belief, is not close to being overpopulated. Time to stop repeating climate change nutcases.

From the article:

quote:

In the study, participants were given a growth hormone and two diabetes medications. Scientists then monitored the test subjects’ epigenetic clocks, to understand the effect on how they aged.

quote:

The epigenetic clock is measured by the body’s epigenome – a record of chemical changes to an organism’s DNA. As people age, chemical modifications or tags are added to people’s DNA, and those change throughout their lives, so by looking at those tags a person’s biological age can be measured.

Apparently age reversal wasn't even the purpose of the study. It was simply a side effect of the study.

Generally, I would say this is fricking awesome, but since our entire species is landlocked on a planet with limited real estate, but not so limited population growth, something like this would suck/be out of 99% of everyone's reach.

Now, if we suddenly were capable of being able to spread out to other planets, even if travel time was still decades, I think extremely long lifespans would be great for everyone. If you could generally have enough things to keep you interested in life for such a long amount of time, something a space faring civilization could offer, it could just be a decision for each individual whether they want to live a very long life or not.

Now we just need some serious advances toward cryogenics and hypersleep pods
