Thankfully, it is just an opinion piece but it really had no business being in "Scientific" American.

I hate the way we misuse "phobia." No one is scared of fatties.

I don't think its self loathing, its a sedentary life style and love of sugar.

I'm fat and that whole article is bullshite. Boils down to calories in calories out. I blame it on beer tasting so freaking good.

They abandoned actual science years ago.
When Obama tried to take away mammogram access, they argued that it was "sound science" because a false positive on a mammogram results in unnecessary chemotherapy. (Those scientific experts seem blissfully unaware that a positive on a mammogram actually results in further testing.)

Scientific-American... is that what nerds insist we call them now?

If they are shamed into losing weight and making better diet choices, they should thank everyone for the additional 15 years of life.
The problem with that train of thought is shaming rarely works to dissuade addictive behavior. Whether it is smoking, eating, gambling, drugs, sex, etc the stress and anxiety brought on by shaming tends to drive them farther into their addiction.
That said there is a difference between a "you do you" message and giving the impression being morbidly obese, smoking 3 packs a day or spending your life nodding on dope is healthy and OK.

Shaming produces more positive results than telling them it’s ok to be how they are though

I'm on the opposite side of thinking with this guy. I make it a point to shame my fat coworkers about their weight. I think being obese is far too accepted in today's world. Probably why I'll never be able to work in the office, though.

Eh, as with everything its nuanced. Some people respond to getting "tough love" and being given a swift kick in the arse. Some just dont. Its about finding the right motivation for each individual
But we obviously shouldn't be doing this garbage and actively promote unhealthy lifestyles. Cause we shouldn't

I guess this is one of the reasons that health providers are keyed in on Metabolic Sydrome rather than specifically obesity. Of course fixing obesity usually takes care of the rest of the symptoms.

it’s not “obesity” that damages people. It’s fearmongering about their bodies that puts them at risk for diabetes, heart disease, discrimination, bullying, eating disorders, sedentariness, lifelong discomfort in their bodies, and even early death.
My brain can't even comprehend this level of idiocy

How does normalizing morbid obesity help anyone?

You know, I'm okay with this. Before people would just put their credentials, and people would say "see a Dr. said....", reporting the bias, lean, or whatever is honest reporting.
I mean, every group wants to feel that they are okay, they want to read stuff that supports them. I get it, like a Vanderbilt football writer has to make them seem poised to be a contender every year. Its business, not personal.

I don't think anybody should be shamed for being fat. I think everyone should be treated with respect. However, part of being a respectable adult means you can face facts. If you wanna be obese and face long-term consequence for it, fine. But ignoring the health implications and burying our heads in the sand about obesity helps no one.
You can be body positive and still want to lose weight. In fact, if you love yourself you should want to be healthy and remain healthy for may years to come.

Leftists ruined Scientific American about 30 years ago

But it’s an opinion piece by supposed experts in the field. This is amazing stuff right here. There’s really nothing too idiotic for a SJW to argue, as long as it creates a victim.
