When I was a kid, unless we were traveling, I spent most days working at the neighbor’s farm doing things like taking care of the cows, bailing bay, bush hogging, etc.
My first official job was when I was 15 and lived in Ketchikan, Alaska. I got a job at Ward’s Cove Fish Cannery.

Picked peaches at a Bienville parish peach orchard. I was 14 and made $1.50 per hour, paid in cash at the end of each day. I did this for 2 years. Then I worked at my dad's store after that.
Everybody needs to do some manual labor when they are young so that they know what a nice job really is and that they don't want to do that forever.

Lifeguard at a water park. Summer between 8th and 9th grade. Still the greatest job I’ve ever had.

Painting AC units on top of a tarred roof in Texas. Cutoffs and shirtless. I’m not a ginger but my hair got sun bleached into a shade of red.
I liked the fast food job I got after that a lot more.

Cashier at a hardware store. Spent the summer stealing Diet Cokes from the vending machine, listening to the Footloose soundtrack on the store speakers, and counting damp money from maintenance men’s pockets. Met a cute boy, though.

Worked summers on contracting jobs with my dad and grandpa uptown NOLA. Hot as balls but got paid in cash and at lunch my Grandpa would buy us Lemon Snapples from the corner store.
Some of my best memories of spending time with him are sitting on a giant porch on a mansion on Nashville or some other uptown street, eating lunch while watching a mid-day downpour.

When at home (in the city), a daycare at the front of my neighborhood.
When at my great aunt/uncle’s tobacco farm, milking cows, feeding goats, and helping harvest/cure/prep tobacco.

Busboy and Oyster Shucker at the Bounty in West End Point, summer 1979. This supplemented my paper route and grass cutting jobs. I was a hustler.

My first summer job was Burger King. I'll starve to death before I do that again.

Curious as to what that entailed.

First summer job was doing misc projects for Truett Cathy Junior year of HS.
Tried to get a job at a burger place in the mall and guy wouldn’t hire me bc I didn’t bring a pencil. Still the only job I interviewed for and didn’t get.

Hoed cotton every summer from 13-18. It sucked. No stars, would not recommend.
Not my first summer job but I did that on my grandfather's farm for about a week. We called it chopping cotton.
Agree not recommended but a lasting memory of how hard farmers had to work.
