See, I get educational magazines with sexual identity posters that they want me to hang on my classroom wall, and this teacher sends a kid out for using a term. Wow. I'd title the essay "Why I Believe That My Teacher is Transgender".

Sounds like he was being a little shite. He knew he was going to get in trouble.

the kid should write an essay about how he's always been taught to tell the truth no matter the consequences and how that is what he did. Lay it on thick, no pun intended.

Private or public school?

Is transgender offensive because people should not be transgender? Or is it offensive because they should be called something else?

This could go one of two ways here, both of them far apart from each other.

Or maybe the little kid was being a clown. In which case, he learned an important lesson today - sometimes, you have to pay a price to make the other kids laugh.

Is it? It's hard to keep track of what people get butthurt about from one day to the next.

Yeah it might be more about how he said it than it was about what he said.

I would gladly pay $50 for the opportunity to write that essay and hand it in but only after making copies for the whole clas, the teacher, the principal and my attorney. The possibilities are endless. When my kid was punished (detention ) for something vaguely similar the school was forced to provide a tutor to catch her up from missed class time under threat of the school district losing all Dept of Ed. Funding.

I would ask the teacher why they thought transgender was offensive, and there would be zero way my kid is writing that essay.

I suspect this had a little to do with it. The kid is very bright and usually bored, but I think that the teacher over reacted to the situation.

FWIW, this happened at a Catholic elementary school in BR.

This almost reminds me of the time I was probably 8 years old or so. My older cousin told me to go in front of an older female cousin and ask her if she was a virgin. I did it in the middle of a pretty big family get together and got in trouble. Took me a couple years to figure out why though.

Why would you make a 6th grader write an essay on it being offensive? Are they gonna show some transgender people the essay saying, "Look he understands why it's offensive now, are we cool"?

Some teachers are the biggest fricking dopes alive.

Do what you said but write the essay explaining how the word is not offensive and is actually quite mainstream and cite "Call Me Caitlyn," as a source. You could even devote the last page to how adults overreacting to the imagination of children while being offended by nothing will insure our country has zero future.

Tell him to take a red marker and write large enough to cover three pages, "You are attempting to punish me for playing a word association game. In case you don't watch tv, listen to radio or surf the Internet then I would like to inform you that the word is mentioned daily on each." If the principal wants to push it go up there and get crazy eyes while he call him an ignorant dumbass
