In my day we just picked on those kids.

This is nothing more than vapid virtue signaling by the school (and/or school board) pushed on by teachers who have never seen a day they didn't want to work.
You can get a kid a Valentines gift for less than $5.00. The bigger problem is the parents who treat Valentines Day like it's freaking Christmas and spend a ton of money on gifts.
For kids, Valentines gifts should be candy (not very expensive), small little flower bouquet for girls (can get one for less than $10) and/or a little card.

You really don't need anything since it is a fake holiday.

The area where I work has canceled school today so that the kids whose parents can't afford to send them something, don't have to feel humiliated/left out due to other parents who can send their child a teddy bear or something...
This just seems like some BS excuse. Schools in my area had a whole week off for seemingly no reason a week ago and in the district next to me they have today and Monday off. A teacher told me its just something they voted on where instead of having random days off throughout the year they are just combining them.

Why would anyone’s parents send them something? Like delivered flowers? The frick?
We had class parties where everyone decorated a shoe box to be theirs valentine mailbox- and each classmate brought little valentines to put in the mailbox.
Edit - WOW this is weird. Are you me?

Is this really a thing? Parents are sending their kids Valentine's Day gift to school? So stupid.
We would make a "mailbox" out of an old shoebox and just exchange valentines with our classroom and eat some candy. What was wrong with that?

Damn, what about the teachers banging students? Didn't anyone consider their feelings?.

You should move before they turn your kids into participation trophy collecting losers

Quit worrying about the kids, they're fine
The real travesty here is that teachers have had to work for almost a month and a half without at least a week off
Is this progress? Is this even America anymore?

Our kids are off today as well as Monday. It’s a teacher workday and they try to tack those ahead of holidays. If they need to make up a weather day they would have kids in school today.

Probably canceled because kid’s parents were afraid to offend other kids of unknown gender because they have not yet decided, and then get sued for bullying.

Where I teach, the student council did a fundraiser this year selling Valentine's bracelets. They were delivered during homeroom this morning. I told all of the students who didn't get one that nobody loved them.

For a lot of families, even just $5 is a lot to ask.
I think it's incredibly stupid to cancel school for the day though. Just tell kids and parents to leave the Valentine's gifts at home and have the kids make cards for each other in class or something.

School should not allow gifts to be sent to the school. How hard is this?

Who TF sends their kid a teddy bear at school for Valentines day?

Mine are off today because they have a 4 day weekend for President's Day.
