School canceled because of Valentines Day???

The area where I work has canceled school today so that the kids whose parents can't afford to send them something, don't have to feel humiliated/left out due to other parents who can send their child a teddy bear or something...

Is this really a thing? Parents are sending their kids Valentine's Day gift to school? So stupid.
We would make a "mailbox" out of an old shoebox and just exchange valentines with our classroom and eat some candy. What was wrong with that?

Are you sure its not just winter break or teacher planning. Seems odd they would cancel for this, considering they are required to attend so many hours a year.

Our local district has today off for students and teachers (was one of the built in weather makeup days; since no closure due to weather yet, they get it off). Monday is a planning day, so kids get a 4 day weekend.
