Why don't they just relocate the thing?

Eh, I see that there is an estimated 6,000 lions in Cali.

What happens when you outlaw all hunting and trapping. Now taxpayers are footing the bill instead of hunters paying to help keep the population in check.

The lion gets it either way because we have guns and opposable thumbs.

they could change requirements for the park.

No kids. One adult must carry.

Or kill it.

I used to take my young daughter on hikes to where mt lions live.
I prepped her every time in what to do if we encounter one. One day she said, i dont want to do that anymore.
Five years later, now 11 she asked me to scale a sheer 100' cliff. By then i was 50.
I said, im sure there are mt lions up there and for me to get up there id be exhausted from the effort.
Suppose one is right there when we crest? Nope. We are not going up there.

Y’all don’t have cougars up there, right? I thought they didn’t live much north of the Canadian border

Camping/hunting= 357 mag
Hiking= 9 mm (it is very light)

Mountain lions are thin skinned and not difficult to kill. Any good hollow point will do the trick. Biggest concern is the stealthiest of a mountain lion.

I have a client in eastern Cali that told me a few months ago a couple was walking with their child and small dog along a trail. A mountain lion grabbed the dog and the family took off running. The wife fell down a ravine into a river and drowned. Terrible. I want to import mountain lions into Louisiana so that hogs can have a predator.

Mountain lions are no joke.I live on the eastern side of the Sierras and a few years ago one of our local ranchers kept finding dead lambs with small holes in their neck. He thought that it was someone shooting them with a .22 and actually put out a reward for who was doing it. After he installed a trail camera he found out what it was. A juvenile mountain lion was getting into the field at night and grabbing the lambs by the throat until they died. He wasn't hungry and didn't eat them - just killed them for fun.

This is the root of the issue. Over the past few decades, two things have happened that are contributing to more stories like this. First, civilization has steadily encroached on the wild, bringing more humans into contact with all wild animals on a daily basis. Second, the number of human hunters has decreased at an alarming rate, either due to a lack of interest or too much government regulation.
Game animals must be controlled in some way. They cannot be allowed to go unchecked. Nature's way of controlling populations of said animals is via the appex predator. Mountain lions are appex predators, and to some extent, they have been protected due to their numbers having dwindled over the past century.
If we protect and foster mountain lions and other predators, the fact that our habitats are coming into closer and closer contact with their natural range is going to increase these types of encounters.
One cannot have the remote life without having contact with the wildlife, be it birds and squirrels or mountain lions and wolves.

This was obviously the right move, but I still feel bad for the cougar. Seeing the urban sprawl of CA behind him in that reddit photo makes you realize how much people have encroached onto their hunting grounds. Totally not his fault and a case of "the city moved to me."

This is 100% how I feel. Mountain lions aren't differentiating between children and other prey. When humans move in on their territory, this happens.

It doesn't mean the ultimate outcome didn't have to happen, but the mountain lion isn't doing anything other than being a mountain lion with humans extending into its space.

We have a lot of mountain lions in Tucson and this isn't uncommon here either. They're big, strong cats and if they start thinking humans can be prey, somebody's gonna die. They'll hunt hikers or people walking their dogs in the outskirts of town.

Yep... Interesting how shark attacks are viewed... You're in the water where the shark lives... You know they are around...

Far more of a problem are coyotes. Missing cat and small dog signs in every sub-division on the Northshore. Just a matter of time b4 a small child is bitten. I don't think they will kill a child. Pretty willey critters.
