You can say your name is pronounced "Jimmy" and the rest of us can say "Bundle of Sticks". Good to know.

I am both a tech nerd and an editor, and this is the root of deep inner conflict that drives me to drink.

"Choosy developers choose GIF." -- this little catch phrase is literally the only reason those closest to it adopted the soft G pronunciation, and without the existence of that Jif peanut butter slogan, better judgement would prevail over the pronunciation of GIF.

Overall, I lean more towards "The creator is linguistically wrong, but he should have some authority over its official pronunciation. However, I will continue to pronounce it with a hard G because there's nothing stopping me."

If there are linguistic rules, which I'm not sure there are, they'd favor Jif. Linguistic rules is a dumb argument and we've proven time and time again as Americans that the we don't give a shite about "linguistic rules", anyway. It's fricking Jif.

It's not just Americans. It's everyone, who speaks any human language, ever. Languages are constantly evolving.

Using the excuse that 'graphical' has a hard G is akin to saying you pronounce NATO with a soft A or pronouncing Atlantic as Ay-tlantic.

"It's pronounced JIF" - Inventor of the GIF
"It's pronounced GIF" - God, inventor of the letter G

Actually, that raises a good point. It's a goddamned acronym. We phoneticize acronyms for fluidity's sake in speech, but much like the evolution of language, the most understood pronunciation is usually nothing more than a matter of popularity.

Of course it is. It's not even an issue over which reasonable minds could differ. If you say gif, you're either dumb, ignorant, or both.

This.

It's not a debate, it's settled science.

We already had the peanut butter.

On the other hand, "GIF" is almost gift.

Actually, that is a wrong fake accent by Walter Koenig. Russians have a letter "V" and it leads off super popular Russian words like Vodka (and their word for "water" is the same as Vodka, just minus the K). What they don't have and a letter/sound they do have trouble with is "w".

True story.
