The silent "k" in knife used to be pronounced. But people realized that way of speaking is stupid as hell, so we made it silent.
Just like jif is stupid as hell so a majority of people say gif with a hard g.

You keep going back to this inventor thing and nobody is arguing that nor cares about it. What is being asserted here is the reason it is widely pronounced the way it is. My point is that it is very likely because there's not a widely used word in the English language or proper name that begins with "gif" and is pronounced with a soft "g". There are some however with a hard "g".
But don't let me interrupt your masturbation to your claim of "rightness" though.
