I'm sure this news will shock most of you but "Lightning strikes and other electrical issues took several pumps out of service during the July 10 sudden rainstorm in New Orleans" according the always reliable SW&B spokesman.

NOLA S&WB: Several pumps went offline due to electric issues during July 10 storm but did not cause flooding

Lightning strikes and other electrical issues took several pumps out of service during the July 10 sudden rainstorm in New Orleans and a pair of canals were pushed near, or over, the brink, Sewerage & Water Board officials said Tuesday.

The problems, however, did not significantly impact the drainage system’s operations or significantly worsen the flooding New Orleans saw as a major thunderstorm struck the city in advance of Hurricane Barry...

These guys regularly lie and just keep doing it. To be clear, they had three or four lightning strikes that took pumps off line? What are the percentage odds of that happening?

I hope some journalist is going to look into these claims. Lightning strikes are recorded and can be accessed online. Insurance companies do it all the time when people claim lightning as a source of a house fire.

*And it is lightning, not lightening you troglodytes.

It's fricking comical at this point. I don't know of a single organization that is more corrupt and incompetent.

Say what you will about Entergy or Cox, but they maintain and fix their shite and rarely have the consistent issues like SWB does. It's time to privatize it and clean fricking house from the top down. Everything Nola City Gov't touches turns to absolute shite.

Not really defending them, but I lost power for 6 hours that day near that area due to lightning strikes, so checks out as far as I know. At least lightning is the reason Entergy put for the outage.

When electrical power is lost the backup generators are supposed to come on line. This didn't happen because the fuel tanks for the generators were empty!

Sounds like human error and incompetence to me...

Sounds like they should have said power outages instead of lightning strikes. That many lightning strikes on pumps means somebody messed up and made those pumps a conduit for lightning and you have a bigger issue.

If only they were once given the funds to convert all of their pumps over to the standard electrical grid instead of its own, unique, outdated power source.

Yeah, could have been worded differently. I’m assuming the pumps don’t have backup generators so they lost power briefly.

SWB are incompetent, but that said I’m still pretty firmly in the “city would have flooded regardless” camp. 6 to 10” of rain in 2 hours is tough to keep up with.

One lightening strike into a power sub station is not unthinkable.

4 or 5 strikes on an series of pump stations is

I agree. I wasn’t trying to absolve swb, just corroborating the claim that lightning was in the area bc it inconvenienced me nearly the whole day. Grid isn’t good in that area either.

I’d hope that our pumps that support the city in emergency situations with adverse weather have not just backup power but incredibly reliable backup.

I also think we would’ve seen standing water but the difference between 5 inches and 8 inches can be millions of dollars in property damage

while i will rarely vote against privatizing anything, and i will never take up for the CNO, the first solution is much simpler than this.

all municipalities have a public works dept. almost none have a separate organization such as the S&WB. They need to become one entity. one problem is that the specifications in the S&WB book are almost as old as the city. seriously. the problem is that PW "costs" the city money, while the S&WB takes in money (even though it is at an annual loss). which one do you think the city would vote to keep?

The grown-ups in that city need to realize that enough is enough, and take things over.

This toilet bowl spiral of incompetence is unnecessary and can’t continue forever.

Someone should pull the quotes from last Wednesday where they claimed they were fully operational.

I love how the mayor and the head of swb used the terms that they were “fully manned.”

Congrats on having employees show up to work!

But seeing how groups of swb employees tend to take ten people to do two man jobs, I wouldn’t consider this a positive.

I figured my $5k water bills would be able provide funding for a competent water department. They should go ahead and charge me $10k next time.
