Not that i would want to but between police and fire in California, the pay they get makes moving to another state at retirement amazing.

Have a neighbor that was FD in cali that was originally from here. Moved back after he retired. He gets paid hella money each month in retirement cause the money he got from cali is drastically higher than it would have been here

Why do so many government workers rip us taxpayers off?

You post the article, but did you read it?

quote:

The payout came during a record-setting year for overtime among the city’s police officers and sheriff’s deputies. Sheriff’s office and PD officials state that the record-setting work done after-hours is a result of diminishing staffing. Sheriff’s office responsibilities, including in courthouses and hospitals, have also increased.

quote:

Many deputies and staff members volunteer for overtime to maintain operations, but mandatory overtime remains necessary, a sheriff’s office spokesperson told the Chronicle. Sheriff Paul Miyamoto has reduced mandatory overtime drafts to two days per week in an effort to improve morale, and the agency has temporarily assigned recruits to administrative duties to help curb overtime costs.

This is the problem with the extremist mindset (not directing at OP, but society in general). Yes, there are many stories that have come out about officers padding their OT, and sometimes committing outright fraud while working seconds jobs while still on the clock.

That doesn’t mean that departments aren’t underfunded. And while obviously the savings of cutting waste/fraud/abuse theoretically help the funding issue, the most often don’t completely solve them. Often times the
cleanup focuses on “Pennywise/Pound Foolish” solutions.

The same argument gets made with schools. I especially love the “why should I pay property tax to fund the schools cause…” arguments.

As a society, we’ve decided there are things that are better done collectively. The price we pay for our civilized society is through taxes. Most would agree that everyone should be taxed “fairly” but it’s hard for a lot of people to
say exactly what that means.

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco deputy received about $903,000 in total compensation in 2025, including roughly $440,000 in overtime, the San Francisco Chronicle reported

$463K in straight time pay? I think we know where the shrinking middle class went!

If they actually worked the hours, it's not their fault.
