One of the larger employers in LA offered me a position that's almost half of what I can make elsewhere. $65k for a mid-level software developer. No wonder everyone leaves this state.

For some jobs they are inflated. Overall I agree. LCOL and family ties helps keep a lot of people in the state.

Did you do a COL comparison? I'm not saying that the salary still isn't "too low", but it may not be as bad as you think.

When you mean elsewhere, where are you talking about? San Francisco? Austin? NYC? Or are you meaning Little Rock, houston, Salt Lake City, Bunkie?

In general yes it's true pay down here is garbage.

But the culture ! The history! The hurricanes! Think of Lootie man, did you ever stop and think about what would happen to Lootie if all the taxpayers left for better options?

Darrell, Most of the places you’ll get double that salary are also double the COL. $120k in San Francisco as a software developer will afford you a 2 hour commute or a tent in the homeless community

It’s bizarre. I mean that’s not even a year end bonus for a developer in CA but people must be taking those jobs or they would be paying more I guess?

I’m not sure you could hire an entry level developer out of college for that on either coast.

Consider it a blessing, take a higher paying job elsewhere. You're life expectancy just increased.

What's the cost of living at said other job opportunities?

I can go to California and make double what I make in Louisiana.

Dude, work from home. Plenty of developer positions that are remote.

Make Silicon Valley wages while living in low cost of living Louisiana. Live like a king.

The New Orleans area is expensive for no reason. High insurance costs (both auto and homeowners), paying a premium for safety, private school, taxes, etc. COL here seems higher than Houston but the salaries are lower.
