Agreed.

People from Missouri pronounce their own state as "missourah".
So, what is acceptable to say if that state is a Jeopardy question?

And I think if you misspell a final Jeopardy! response you don't win either.
Incorrect.
It does have to be phonetically correct, however.

Coolio and TMZ have checked in on it
quote:
Coolio wants white people to remember one rule of thumb when it comes to hip-hop -- the "E-R" will always get you in trouble ... as a "Jeopardy!" contestant learned the hard way. The rapper dropped his grammar lesson while reacting to a contestant mispronouncing "Gangsta's Paradise" on Monday night's episode. Nick Spicher said "gangster" instead of "gangsta," and it cost him $3,200.
quote:
Coolio, with his adorable niece on his lap, told us he thought Spicher's answer was close enough and he should've gotten the money. However, he says when in doubt, go with just an "a" and not the "er" sound. He wasn't only referring to gangster/gangsta.

Yeah, getting that wrong in another context could mean your arse.

White people are allowed to say **** now?

I can’t believe he knew that answer in the first place. Go white boy, go white boy, Go.

Nick was not happy. Almost (almost) went gangster on Alex.

It reminds me of a guy on Wheel of Fortune who lost a round because he mispronounced Achilles.
Depending on his exact phrase, that is kind of messed up. Words like that can have different pronunciation with the same spelling, and as you say, it is foreign so you can't even use the domestic variant as the reason.
You have the most common uh-kil-eez.
But in French it is said ah-sheel
There is such a thing as TOO nitpicky.

That’s the white rapper pronunciation

He’s “white and nerdy”
And that ruling is crap...

Apparently in the same category, an earlier response from another contestant was "Will I Am I am Legend" and they accepted that when a true before and after response is "Will I am Legend".

Imagine if the roles were reversed... would you hear Alex explaining to a black woman” I’m sorry, you said errange but the right word was orange, we have to take that money back”

He’s the right age to know Weird Al’s parody Amish paradise.
