The effectiveness of nuclear weapons isn't in using them. If it comes down to having to actually use them you've already lost. If we ever start trading ICBMs with Russia, the whole world will lose.

Yep, Mutually Assured Destruction, I believe is the old Cold War-era term.

I do remember the book was FAR better than the movie and the movie was pretty good.

This, and cool story below.

I was randomly on a DC Blue Line metro (that's the local subway) when I noticed the guy standing next to me (who was in Navy uniform, that isn't at all uncommon around here) was wearing Captain's eagles. And he was holding a notebook with the USS Dallas logo on the front.

So I asked him if he was the CO of the famed USS Dallas from Red October, and whether Jonesy actually existed.

He said that he was the former CO and rotating off to Pentagon assignment. But that a guy like Jonesy from the movie had indeed been on the Dallas under his command and was a freakishly good sonar operator.

I have no way to verify this, just passing it on.

Dmitry Donskoy was the first Russian prince who successfully defied and led a revolt against the Mongol occupiers of Russia in the 14th century. He is sort of their George Washington who led a citizen army against the long-time foreign occupiers.

My favorite Clancy book is Red Storm Rising which details what a war between the USA/USSR would have looked like in the 80's.

You spelled Larry Bond wrong.

RSR is my favorite as well. Bond co wrote it with Clancy.

Yep, good book there.

Also not worried about anything Russian from the Cold War. I am amazed it has not sunk on its own or rusted away.

If you had one nuke, where would you drop it? Well, the top two targets in the United States are

1. Washington D.C.
2. Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama

Redstone makes sense if it's 1947.

The two big ones on the Arsenal are

MDA: Missile Defense Agency
SMDC: US Army Space and Missile Defense Command

Secondarily

AMCOM: US Army Aviation and Missile Command
AMRDEC: Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center

Colorado Springs is likely the third biggest target but I've only ever seen 1 and 2 actually listed.

My dad was a commander during the Cold War on the SSBN Daniel Boone. Pretty cool to get his perspective on this.

It also bugs the crap out of me the he has medals for stuff he can't tell me about

You'd need to be more specific than naming a city. Nukes now are much less powerful than they were back in the 60's because explosive power is wasteful and they're much more accurate. Also, building codes are vastly better.

You need to target a specific area rather than just say "DC". I think a strong case could be made for nuking Ashburn VA instead because that's where plenty of the area tech talent lives. Plus one of the internet's biggest data centers is there. If you drop it instead on the National Mall you basically kill a bunch of tourists and incompetent government functionaries.
