The reason is once you open that first locking ring and tube door... you just gave away your position. At that point it's all about getting rid of every missile before the enemy kills you.

What's the unclassified answer? I seem to remember in "Hunt for Red October" that a time was given - 8 or 10 minutes, maybe - that it took for the missles to spin up and be launched. Not sure where opening the locking ring fell in the pre launch sequence.
Can you say how long it takes an Ohio class to get off the 1st and how long until the 24th?

I honestly don't remember. I left the boomer for fast attacks in 2003. They launch 2 at a time but I can't remember how long it takes. It's a pretty detailed process just to get into position. You have to get to a shallower depth and "hover" which involves clearing baffles, looking for surface contacts, and then getting the hovering system locked in.
Missile techs are running through all their pre-launch shite while that is going on... validating launch codes, getting keys, spinning up missiles.
It takes a little bit of time.

That's got to be a surreal job. Imagine while they're getting the missiles prepped they'd thinking in the back of their head "is this real or is this a drill?"
and "I'm about to kill a couple million people"

Yeah, I knew it wasn't just like slapping in a mag, chambering a round, taking off the safety and pulling the trigger. I was just mostly curious about the launch interval. I'm sure it's not just a matter of slapping 24 buttons as quickly as you can.

Like I said, it's been almost 15 years... but from what I can remember once they start leaving the tube it's like a minute or so between each one.
ETA - they have to open the tube door, launch the missile, close that tube door, then open the next one. It takes a little time for all that open/close shite.

Why wouldn't they. The Baltic is in their back yard. I'd rather it there than in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean.
