That thing is probably so loud you could track it with $500 worth of gear. If they even so much as opened the doors to launch a nuke, one of our subs would send it to the bottom.

That book is the fricking shite.

I have that but haven't read that in a while, there was another pretty good one about us (cold war era,) bringing up a sunken commie sub, disguising it as oceanic "research," think it was a the Glomar Challenger's true purpose for being built

I loved the story where we tapped a Soviet undersea communications cable in the Sea of Okhotsk back in the 60's and kept retrieving the tape recordings until the end of the Cold War thirty years later.

Game over comrades, we might as well throw in the towel.

The Hunt for Red October hooked me as a Tom Clancy fan.

20 years later, I still read each of the Jack Ryan books when they come out.

My favorite Clancy book is Red Storm Rising which details what a war between the USA/USSR would have looked like in the 80's.

Red Storm Rising is my favorite Clancy book as well. I bought and read it on my way to Germany in 1988 when I was on my way to my new duty station with the 11th Armored Cav at Fulda. Kinda put me in a Cold War mindset.

we still have to have some live practice, shite as it is, the GoM bottom is getting pretty crowded with all of the Phantoms and Vipers we send to a watery grave there

The one that goes from the White Sea to the Baltic Sea.

It's probably way too small for this, my guess is it's more barge-sized.

Ah, OK. Yeah, that thing can only hold small traffic due to it's limited depth, which according to this is only 11.5 ft at it's shallowest...

I'm honestly surprised that any of these subs are still active, I thought they were all deactivated or scrapped by now.

The most badass looking boat ever.

The Typhoons are being phased out. They may be good for soundbytes and political statements but they are a relic of the cold war. This is nothing more than Putin flashing his balls at NATO

+1

It actually looks very weak on their part. Just more "look at me"
