Why don't they blow them up and sink them
Then salvage later once the water goes down

Several people have recommended that yesterday when the news was doing a live Facebook video. No one gave an answer as to why not. Some were recommending using f16's to do.

That's a little extreme.
Surely a demolition team could be helicoptered in and out.

Ah well at that point, call in the air guard for some target practice. Sucks for the barge owner but its preferable to taking out a dam

Why not just string a heavy cable across the river?

So somebody stop them. They don't have tugs available?

The ‘Limitation of Liability’ statutes that limit the liability of the vessel owner to the value of the vessel and its cargo are really a screw job for the municipalities.
Say a wayward barge were overtop any levee, causing a failure? The loss of life and property would be substantially limited and those who lost their things would get screwed.
Like the Sunshine Bridge - $5 mm worth of damage, Marquette Towing only had to pay $1.5mm and the State of Louisiana got screwed out of the rest.
Why not stop barge & ship traffic on the lower Mississippi unless there is better insurance or accountability?
Otherwise, there could be a huge mishap and the responsibility fall on us, the taxpayers.

Only problem with blowing them up would be the potential collateral damage. It's not like the barge will just disintegrate and it's not even guaranteed that it would sink. Worse case the pressure from the explosion collapses more river control and the barge breaks into multiple large pieces. Still think that would be at least an effort, better than just sitting back and watching a barge ruin everything hoping it gets caught on a sandbar

Out of curiosity, has the F16 thing ever been used as an option in a situation like this? And, if so, was it in the youtube era?

Runaway barges
at first glance I read as "runway barges," thought it was going to be about a "curvy" modeling show

They hit it and the dam held

I think Webbers Falls is where the barge destroyed the bridge 15 or 20 years ago

The red barge sank immediately. The other floated for a short while before it was pulled under.
