I knew I knew the name of the town from somewhere. Yep, 17 years ago. I had to drive cross country on I-40 right after that. Had to make a long detour to get around.

News said the barges had 5,000 lbs of fertilizer on them

There will be some green stuff south of that dam

...5000 lbs or 5000 tons?

That damn took the hit like a champ.

Built when people cared.

Curious how the dam will hold up with those barges being pushed against it 24/7 for the foreseeable future?

Infrastructure in the Midwest has been absolutely destroyed

I moved to Louisiana right around the last time it flooded in 2011. I too, took a long route because the interstate was flooded/closed. It's far worse this time and in many more places. The infrastructure up there was built/maintained well and this still happened. Just goes to show that man cannot stop mother nature if she really wants to push it.

One day when crossing MS river into Vicksburg, I noticed that a barge looked like it has been shoved onto the shore. Is that done deliberately sometimes to retrieve later?

Is there a reason they can't put tugs out there and get them away from the dam?

Probably because they are completely submerged. Dont think there is a river tug strong enough to pull something like that off the bottom in a raging flood staged river

Oh

Last I saw on the news was them slamming into the spillways.

If they are on the bottom then what threat do they pose?

I fish a spot on the Miss River that there are always huge ropes left on the bank for barges to stage.

Sometimes there are barges tied off, often a place for tugs with barges to stop overnight, for what very reason.

Depends on how they sank.. If they are cross ways against the dam and that much force pushing against that big of an area could cause the dam to become unstable.. It's potentially blocking the water from flowing freely and just beating against that solid piece of steal which in turn is beating against the dam.

Why don't they blow them up and sink them

Because that steel would still be there, rolling along the bottom. Maybe it would hang up, but maybe it would keep rolling until it hit a bridge, or a dam. And it would hit with a lot more force than if it was floating. It’s a gamble: less likelihood of hitting a structure, but more damage. Who would take responsibility for that in the absence of engineering calculations and conclusions?

Why not just string a heavy cable across the river?

The shore anchors would take a month to build.

Why not stop barge & ship traffic on the lower Mississippi unless there is better insurance or accountability? Otherwise, there could be a huge mishap and the responsibility fall on us, the taxpayers.

You’d pay for it one way or the other, either as a taxpayer or as a consumer. And if you tried the latter you’d find that each perpetrator would go bankrupt and you’d still pay as a taxpayer. If you tried to get purveyors to provide bonds you’d end up with little competition and higher prices - again the consumers would pay. The current system is best.

Even before they sank, officials said there weren't any tugboats capable of fighting the river at its current level to even get close to the barges.
