Fax the specs/trim of the vehicle you want to several dealerships.

Friend did this several years ago and it worked pretty well.

1) trade in - get an offer from CarMax to have in hand at the dealership. That sets your minimum trade in value. They’ll try to get you to settle for less otherwise. Also have the KBB to negotiate with
2) haggling - don’t give them info. Info is power. Lure them in, make them think you’re a scrub to be taken advantage of. This will get them invested in the process, and get you better numbers when it turns out you’re intelligent
3) ask for more, and settle for the amount you really wanted. The “art of the deal” - compromise leaves everyone feeling good

Find a used one coming off a lease rather than brand new.

Figure out what the current rate is, what your trade in is worth and what a fair price for the vehicle is. Do the math to figure out what a fair payment for the term would be using the above. Shoot for a conservative number.

Go in and say “I want to trade in that car for this car and want my payment to be $XX for X years”

Prepare for them to go higher on payment or longer on term. When they tell you they can’t tell them how you got your number and at a rate you already know you can get.

Prepare to walk if they don’t get close.

Ask to see The Buyer's Sheet before signing and agreeing to anything.

They will let you sit around 3-4 hours throwing all kinds of BS/numbers at you to scramble your brain, then show you everything on an upside down computer.

I got "GOT' on my last purchase because by the end I was worn down and just wanted to leave.

You now have to basically extend out past houston for better deals. Gulf coast is high as a Giraffs arse.

We've been looking for a few months. You put your search to 250 Mike's you double your results and save thousands.

Calls, FW area, Austin, Longview, mississippi...

If you are willing travel a bit farther some instances its 4-5k cheaper

Separate the price of the vehicle from any trade-in and how you're going to pay for it.;

1 - negotiate the price of the vehicle
2 - negotiate any trade-in
3 - determine payment; IF you're going to get a loan, have something in your pocket before going to the dealer. IF you're paying cash DO NOT LET THE DEALER KNOW THIS until 1 & 2 are complete.

Dropping 100k on a depreciating asset makes bad financial sense either way you slice it.

I bet if plop your car payments in the market they will out perform that 1% interest.

I've bought my last 2 out of state paid a transfer trucking to deliver it to me.

The sales guys were all confused that I didnt want to come by. I said, well is it new? Does it have any issues? Then I dont need to see it.

Then looked for best pricing over the country and negotiated. Sent a certified check as a down payment to hold till the paperwork completed.

Easy peazy.

Not new but when I was looking for a used vehicle I used cargurus and others and expanded my search to 300 miles from where I lived.

Took me about 3 months but found 1 in Baton Rouge


I’d definitely look at other big towns and compare prices just remember where there might have been flooding and be suspect of cars in those areas now or those that were there then shipped out other places

I was told to look at specific spots under and around vehicles for signs of flooding. Do your diligence and don’t feel bad about asking questions and bringing someone with you that knows cars

I make plenty of money but will not pass up an opportunity to pocket 7k with 2 days of my time and neither would you.

If you say you would rather buy local and spend 7k more you are exactly the kind of person that wouldn't understand why people, even if they are financially secure, are trying to help someone get a deal on a car and discussing the best way to do it.

This should all be done as 2 individual transaction. If a dealer wants do it as one transaction, walk away


Depends on the state and if there's a tax credit on the trade in.

If no tax break, yes, treat as two separate transactions.

1. Visit cars.com to find the exact year, make, model, and trim level you want.

2. Sort all cars within (say) 200 miles by lowest price first.

3. Call the Internet sales rep at the lowest-price dealer. Ask him to confirm the final drive-out price. If he adds anything more than TT&L to the price, keep going down the list until you find the best actual price. It may take several calls.

4. Once you find the best deal, ask the salesman to hold the car with a $150 credit card deposit until you get there.

I decide what car I want,
Call dealers within 300 miles,
Ask for their best price,
After 7 or 8 calls I decide best deal,
Call selected dealer back,
Small deposit,
Drive there and pick it up,
Pay with a check.

Last 2 cars I've driven to Houston area (from Hammond area) dealers to pick up. A trade in was negotiated via photo email. I don't talk to salesmen face to face until after we agree on a deal.

Right. And everyone who needs a full size SUV to navigate their family need should resort to focusing on market investments from their cave.

No family travel. Period.

The money we saved on plane travel, pet boarding (the dogs travel with us), etc. more than bypass the $67k we dropped on a GMC Yukon XL that allows this. AND, the 4wd extra expense has pulled us out of the mountains more than a few times.

All that said, enjoy dying with as much money as you can horde. SMH

That’s a sad existence……..
