It has been over 10 years since I bought a vehicle from a dealership. Back then there was plenty to choose from and you could find the same vehicle in multiple places. That made it easier for buyers as the dealer had to work to get your business.

Fast forward to 2023. Shortages still abound. It seems that negotiating is happening virtually more than ever before.

With all that being said what is your strategy to A. find the vehicle you want & B. Get a decent deal on said vehicle?

Is your car broken down? Do you have a way to get to work tomorrow?

If so you have the leverage. It’s important that until you get a car you’re really happy with, for a price you can comfortably afford, that your plan walking in to each dealership is to walk away without a car.

If nothing else this will put you in the mindset to not get taken advantage of.

Are you buying something in cash or financing?

I imagine the same rules still apply. I would be willing to drive a wider radius due to fewer choices. I seem to have heard prices are better in bigger markets like Texas, someone would need to confirm that.

I found larger markets such as Houston are cheaper for a similarly packaged vehicle compared to Louisiana Dealers.

Find it on the internet

Make offers by phone and/or email so I don't have to waste my time playing games on the lot.

If you’re trading something in, that price and subsequent tax savings plays a major part in the deal. If you can’t haggle the purchase of the new one, haggle the sell of the old one.

Find a car in inventory you like and email their internet salespeople for a quote. Do that for all of the dealerships you are willing to drive to.

Email back and forth with whoever gives you a decent quote. Once you have one you like, go to the dealership, bypass the front salespeople and go straight to the internet people. If everything is still on the up and up, and you are happy, sign off and talk to the finance people.

In my experience, the internet guys tend to get to their best price a lot quicker than the guys up front. I tested it once and the guy up front was pretty pissed when I pulled out the quote for the exact same car that was $3,500 less than "the best deal he could get".

email is great. I went to Carfax and got a quote for my car then emailed 3-4 dealerships asking for a quote and said im busy traveling for work and cant come in.

I got quotes from all ranging within 2k of each other. Emailed them all the same back saying i had one 2k lower and unless they can do something will be going with them. Ended up getting another 1k off the one that was 2k lower.

Then went in to drive it.

you have more leverage than ever now.

I live in BR. I test drive what I’m looking at here and when I decide for sure, I get online and start shipping Houston. Buy online, fly one way to Houston for $100, then drive it home. Done that for my last 2 vehicles. You’ll save thousands in Houston

I pulled out my USAA pre-approved financing and guaranteed 500$ off at last minute after I negotiated down on their best price. They were pissed, and trying not honor… ended up calling USAA to verify.. and then got them to throw in the all-weather mats free

How much are taxes to register the vehicle in Louisiana after you bought in TX?

Similar here. I decide what I want then shop it with dealerships from Houston to Atlanta.

Last one was a Toyota still on the ship outside of port of Houston. Five different dealerships were quoting the same exact vehicle identification #.

Took lowest quote to my local dealer. They matched it, I bought it.

You still pay Louisiana taxes regardless of where you purchase the vehicle

You only pay the tax for where you reside. Texas taxes won’t factor in and dealership will still handle it all for you.

This. Know what you want ahead of time. Know what you want to pay.

If the dealer can't get that car for that price, then literally get up and walk off.

Twice now, I've had dealers come after me, and, whaddya know, they figured out a way to get to my price.

Lots of competition out there right now. That is definitely to your advantage. Good luck.
