re: Root Canal Procedure-are they always painful?

It’s not bad at all. I had a bad cavity that I knew needed a root canal and I had put it off because it stopped hurting. That motherfricker started hurting badly and my dumb arse thought it would be fine to head offshore for two weeks. I survived and drove from the heliport straight to the endodonist. It was such a relief that I didn’t even bother getting the script filled for the pain meds he prescribed.

Depends. First, never let a dentist do the procedure.
That's funny because my first root canal was done by my dentist, and it wasn't bad at all with no complications. The second one was done by an endodontist, and she liked to have killed me... That evening my jaw felt like it went 12 rounds with Tyson.

Pray they don’t give you 7 triazolam while on gas, causing you to overdose, then break instruments off in your jaw and leave them.

They are not bad anymore with all the numbing agents they use

Root Canal Procedure-are they always painful?
I just had one yesterday. The actual procedure for the root canal took less than 10 minutes. The shots were not bad. From my count, I had at least 6 of them.

He said that there should be no pain whatsoever during the procedure and that I’ll fall asleep while it’s being done.
I was wide awake after my procedure. The numbing medicine helps, and mine lasted about a total of 8 hours after my procedure.
The total procedure lasted about 1.5 hours. X-rays multiple times, topical medicine to treat the infection, ensuring all the roots were removed, and then the fitting for the temporary.
I did not look at the actual tools going into my mouth. I just closed my eyes, and popped in my headphones. You can still hear the drilling and grinding, but at least you have music to help you pass the time.

Tell them… no insist.. on Nitrous Oxide. Shots won’t bother you. Probably no death grip on chair throughout entire procedure.

My wife is a giant baby when it comes to anything teeth. She had to have one done two years or so ago. She was sent to the root canal specialist and her anxiety over going far outweighed the pain even she actually experienced. She said she didn't feel anything during the procedure and had very minor discomfort after.

No.
Get dosed with the anesthesia if they give you that option and you won't know shite. The ONLY thing that sucked for mine was when they exposed the nerve, they had not sufficiently novacained my gum area and he prepared me and asked if I could feel anything when he touched it, and that sent a spike of pain to my toenails, but it was over as fast as it started. After that, you could have sawed my face off and I'd have felt nothing.
Modern pain killers and topical anesthetics are amazing.
I will say i don't have a gigantic mouth so when they put those spacers in it was pretty uncomfortable.

it's been a long time for me, but no I don't remember it being painful. I do however remember feeling like my heart was going to jump from my chest due to whatever meds they gave me during the procedure.

My reason for the recommendation is based upon the fact that endodontists are equiped for a wider variety of potential issues vs a dentist. It's their whole purpose for existence. Anecdotes prove nothing.

Modern dentistry is nothing like the old days (1970s ish).
You don't even have to hold your mouth open anymore. They put foam wedges in there.
I usually fall asleep. in the chair.
The Qtip with the topical anesthetic applied before the needle of Novocain makes it virtually painless.

I've had a root canals and implant from a cracked tooth. Both procedures are relatively painless and simple to endure. Man up.

Somehow I managed to split a tooth and I didn’t want to pull it.
In my experience I have had 2 root canals. Both of the molars cracked post root canal after the temporary crown and before the permanent crown. Both also had to be extracted post crown due to chronic infections due to the cracked tooth. On top of the pain you end up with a pain in the wallet for a root canal and crown and then an extraction and implant.
Your mileage may vary though but be warned that a tooth that is already cracked might not be saved by the root canal.

My last one wasn’t painful one bit. Get it done by an Endodontist. They specialize in root canals and are very good at it.
My last one was painless and quick. Not counting numbing me he was only working on me for 15 minutes.

Has a high success rate, I believe 5 years it can last or longer.

I had the tiniest of cracks in my tooth. Drilled out, and from what I was told, they used a newer type of filler that is supposed to reinforce the crack from within and the likelihood that my tooth will crack any further is very slim, especially once the permanent crown is set into place.
It sounded good to me. Time will tell if this is the case or not.

I’ve had two and don’t recall feeling any pain at all. It’s not comfortable to have a wedge keeping your mouth open but it’s not painful.

Needing a root canal that is untreated hurts like hell. Had one many years ago and two dentists couldn't locate which tooth it was. I couldn't drink enough to dull the pain. The increasingly strong pain killers had little effect.
Third dentist was a root canal specialist. He took a little rod of ice and touched it to my teeth in the area where it hurt. Boom, that lit it up and identified it.
The root gets infected and inflamed causing swelling that presses on the nerve. Every heart beat brings a spike of sharp pain.
I was moving back to NY from Boston soon so the dentist didn't want to start a process he wouldn't be able to finish, but he gave me the newly released OTC Advil with instructions to take 4 every 4 or 5 hours. That reduced the inflammation and took the pain away. Lucky my stomach survived 3 weeks of that much Advil.
