Roofer wants to start work before adjuster has come

Is this appropriate? Doesn’t insurance adjuster have to come out first? Also, contractor wants policy number and claim number. Doesn’t this seem unprofessional?

I wouldn't let him. No way in hell.

Sounds like a great way to come out of pocket for a new roof, baw.

Really needs to be Ok'd by Adjuster or Insurance company beforehand. They don't need your policy # but the claim # could be handy for them so that they can retrieve funds later on from your ins. co.

Find a new roofer.
Also, make sure you use someone local for the roof. If there are issues down the road, it makes life a lot easier.

Don't do it or read the policy contract in full before giving the green light

There were thousands of over zealous roofers here in LC a year ago. They wanted to start early...they also wanted a cash deposit.
Unless you want to out of pocket the money, I would wait on your adjuster.

minimal work to ensure that no more damage could occur, such as putting up a tarp or something similar. But certainly would not have permanent repairs completed.

Not an expert, but I believe insurance covers taking extraordinary measures to protect inside. Blue tarp, even repapering. Maybe a new roof if you document conditions.

Tarp yes. New roof before adjuster shows up, no.

99% sure you shouldn't.
1% chance you could but I would call the insurance co. before consulting the OT

Temporary tarps will be reimbursed but you should at least submit an estimate to your insurance company and get approval before replacing the entire roof. Went through this during the ice storm.

The adjuster is not a roofer and is not going to fix your roof. If the roofer is local and reputable then take plenty of photos and let him repair whatever he thinks needs to be repaired. Get detailed invoice from him and submit it to your insurance adjuster when he gets there. The insurance company will pay it. They will have no basis for refusal of the repair.
After Laura last year, the adjuster came before the roofer and decided that everything under the tarp had to be replaced and nothing not under the tarp needed to be replaced. When Delta came, I had leaks all over the areas that weren't tarped. The roofer replaced the whole roof. My insurance company refused to pay the difference from what their adjuster approved. I just filed the lawsuit against them.
This sucks for me, but letting the adjuster decide what needs to be replaced can also be a big mistake. However, don't deal with any shady roofers either.

Get quotes and submit it to insurance. Last year for Laura, they approved my new roof and it was installed before the adjuster's worksheet came out. Didn't cost me a dime.

Call my agent...or ask the OT?....

Roofer only cares about getting paid...doesn't care who does it. You need to make sure your adjuster approves beforehand.

You are missing the time part. They will pay, they just don't think they have to yet (suit filed last week). Additionally, I didn't have the chance to have the roof fixed before the adjuster came to my house. Had I already had it fixed, the adjuster would have approved the invoice amount just as he approved everything that had already been paid for. Waiting for the adjuster is just waiting to give your insurance company a reason to only pay what the adjuster approves.
