Great thing for him to do, only if I could have been so fortunate.

Unreal - private colleges are pushing 70K ++ per years all in with room and board.

Retarded response. It's not jealousy to ponder the mindset of someone who busted their arse through school to pay for their living expenses who sees someone who fricked around during school and never worked hard, get their entire education paid anyways.

Howard and Morehouse are well-respected schools. It's the public HBCUs that worthless.

It’s like the people who took out SBA loans for the Flood damage while others were getting free government grants. Haven’t we learned anything, the government will take care of you.

I agree. A kid who's parents put up the money for school could have saved that money to give him/her to buy a house for graduation had they known student loans would be paid.
It's a selfish thought process and all but it's natural as frick too. I'd think it if my kid was in that position. Like why did my kid's education cost me 70+k and theirs was free?

From a nola.com article

quote:

In the weeks before graduating from Morehouse on Sunday, 22-year-old finance major Aaron Mitchom drew up a spreadsheet to calculate how long it would take him to pay back his $200,000 in student loans — 25 years at half his monthly salary, per his calculations.

quote:

His mother, Tina Mitchom, was also shocked. Eight family members, including Mitchom's 76-year-old grandmother, took turns over four years co-signing on the loans that got him across the finish line.

If a billionaire wants to spend his money in this fashion, paying off these loans, then good for him, he's earned that right.

But 200K for undergrad, requiring 8 different people to co-sign loans... the system is broken.

I'm assuming that 50K a year covers all of his living expenses as well, but damn.

I bet the kid that worked 20 hours a week to pay for his own education feels like an idiot now.

In what generation did 20 hours a week of work pay for college education? Including living expenses, etc.

Tuition, fees, and books at Morehouse are $14k a year and a lot get scholarships or reduced tuition. So this fool either has been at school for 10+ years or there is something else going on.

The system isnt broken, people take advantage of the "system" and make very bad decisions

none, but at a place like UNO it would make quite a dent.

I don't like this bc this is going to encourage other graduating classes to want the same thing. These kids are gonna miss the struggle everyone else has which builds character.

At their TU Commencement, one of the little füt's had the Dalai Lama give them deathbed "total consciousness".

So they got that going for them....

This is probably the fifth different figure concerning Morehouse’s tuition ITT. Not saying you’re not right. People earlier were saying it was 30 grand a year

Seems like a taxable event for these fine graduates.

There are two ways to do this.

1) He could give a "gift" to each student in the amount need to clear the debt. Likely it would be a deemed gift, but the money would go directly to the loanholder/ There would be no income tax event for the grads, and he would not get a deduction. He would also potentially owe some gift tax (this could be avoided/lessened by structuring the payments over a number of years).

2) He could make a gift to the school, and the school could retroactively give grants / scholarships for the years at play, which would wipe out the loans. He would get a charitable deduction for his gift to the school. The students (or more likely, their parents) could have some recapture income to the extent they got any tuition deductions / tax credits for education.

If this man wanted to, he could help out the families with that bill as well, by making a gift, which is probably less than 10K per student.

Or, he could loan the families the 10K to pay back the taxman, and set favorable terms, etc.

There are ways to deal with this.
