I am not saying I support one side or the other, but this is the dumbest argument.
Anyone, on either side of this, that is arguing over the quality of the men depicted by the statues is being made to miss the point...which is maybe %5 of the entire city of New Orleans could have named them or told you anything substantial about them.
That's why there was never any controversy before with people wringing their hands about how horrible they were...and it's why there was never any saluting to them either.
For most people, they have essentially been simple artwork, and given the length of time they have stood there have made them historical in themselves as landmarks in NOLA. They should have stayed put for that reason, and that reason alone.
Everything else is smoke and mirrors.

The spotlight isn't so favorable and Mitch seems to have pissed people off on this issue. Instead of getting friendly coverage from a one statue a week removal we are in "get it over ASAP" mode.
one of the news stations was asking Mitch questions this morning on the morning news and you could tell he looked tired and worn out....he did not want to talk about the statues and where they were being stored.
It was written all over his face that he was in over his head but his ego will never let him admit it.
Instead after this is all over his pandering arse if going to issue an apology to everyone on how he handled the removal process but if he had to do it over again he wouldn't change a thing....he will say it was all worth it

Uhh, the people who are for the monuments WORK for a living and actually contribute to the system.

Correct. They'll eventually put a toussaint statue on the lee pedestal

Lots of opportunities for "community artwork" displaying various items that are long white and erect. A middle finger would also work.

That's a shame from the perspective that he never would have wanted that.

They're not removing the pedestal....
It will be left standing like a big middle finger frick YOU from Mitch to the rest of the city
I believe they are going to remove the pedestal tonight as well. Landrieu's plan it to build a large fountain by 2018 in place of Lee Circle.

It will give the hundreds of homeless people living under the interstate a great place to take a bath and shower.

but there is a difference between colonization efforts (for example he endorsed a venture to colonize a small island near Haiti in 1862) and sending them to slave plantations. I think that action was deplorable, but it isn't what you suggested.
And tell me... What other work would these former slaves do? The same they did here post civil war. Work the land just as they did before. Fact is that's the work that was available. And the treatment there was far worse than it is here.
Read up on the sugar and banana plantations and the treatment of the workers.

nah, they will just put some cheesy arse painted fleur-de-lis up there and then a whole new fight will start over the symbolism of the fleur-de-lis
in other words, the fight never ends with the SJWs and that's the real issue here...for me at least it has NOTHING to do with supporting slavery or anything even remotely close
