The bridge was structurally deficient before Laura

Take 220 around it takes longer especially during high traffic but is safer.

This is flat out not true and dumb. Structurally the bridge is fine. It will last as long as they need it to. There is no danger structurally to the bridge.

It is functionally obsolete. Meaning it is old so standard have been updated and it no longer meets some of those standards.

Lake Charles Bridge Rated 'Structurally Deficient'

quote:

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced Wednesday that parts of the I-10 Bridge, which is currently rated as "structurally deficient" by the U.S. Department of Transportation

Whatever you say buddy.

Civil Engineering updates their specs and standards more than anyone.

Something that was built 20 years ago to satisfy those older codes, could easily fail the current calculations.

I’ve seen it in the O&G industry where a company wants to duplicate a design from 20 years ago, but can’t do it because the changes in recent codes say the old design is unsatisfactory.

It was probably a deal between the state and the casino. New bridge and new casino funding package deal.

DOTD has a bridge inspection crew and drone team headed out to it now.

You are almost correct. The bridge does have structural problems such as loss of section in main members and connection points. If Louisiana just painted their assets every 10 years we wouldn't have a state full of deteriorated steel bridges.

The "structurally deficient" number thrown around in the media and earlier in this thread includes things like no shoulders, narrow approaches, non-spec bridge rail, etc. Things that make it functionally obsolete.

These are all separate numbers behind the scenes but it is protected information. Many of the news articles don't have all of the information and are misleading.

Hey guys, there may be substantial damage to the I-10 bridge. We need to do a thorough inspection to see that it’s safe.

Ok, I’ll make a call to close the bridge to traffic.

Nah, leave it open.

Fill the boat with cement and weld it to the bridge.

True. I've inspected it and I have seen much worse.

Yeah, agree. I could argue the newer bridge over the Atchafalaya in Morgan City is worse off than the LC bridge.

I didn't like driving over that bridge before the storm, now it's really a gamble.

The bridge opened in 1952, it is deficient because it has deteriorated structurally due to its age not because the code changed.

is that why they've had it pretty much shut down for the past year and half and will be half shutdown for another 6 months?

The grade of the bridge does not meet current standards. The structural integrity of the bridge is fine, and it’s been maintained over the last few years

They recently blasted and painted the Atchafalaya bridges in Krotz Springs. Also some steel spans on the basin bridge. I think the Morgan City bridge was next.
