It is no secret that Putin has long wanted to reclaim Russian dominance over Eastern Europe, especially the Baltic States. The danger comes if becomes plausible to retake by force what they lost when the Soviet Union collapsed in 91.
As for suffering massive losses, who's going to inflict those losses? We don't have enough of a force in Europe to do much of anything. And as for economic sanctions, Europe needs Russia far more than Russia needs Europe. ( LINK)

Countries under your control don't participate in Sanctions. Besides everyone knows sanctions are toothless
Putin has a hard-on for establishing the old Soviet sphere of influence. It's not really about invasion as it is getting countries to align with you over your rivals.

Russia is not interested in invading Europe. Russia is currently exploring options for using military force to secure their traditional spheres of influence, which do not extend into Western Europe.
Russia prefers very quick and clean military campaigns like the one they ran in Georgia.

Well, if they did attack right now Europe would for all intents and purposes be on their own. We don't have anything in Europe that would constitute a viable military threat to Russia. And by the time we could deploy enough of a force from the US to Europe the war would be long over.

Most of that "cracking up" is done because of recent advancements in their air defense systems, which is why the ransom payment to Iran is a real head-scratcher to me. It means proliferation of those technologies.

Here's the problem, Russia could be ready to roll into the Baltic states or even Poland within hours.
It would take us weeks, actually months, to move from the US to Europe anything close to a force capable of stopping them.
