All you geniuses are going to take it out on the server. You won’t have to decide if it’s worth it when no one will be there to serve it. Blame the right people here, idiot’s.

Just got back from eating out and there was a 3.5% “dual charge”. It was a add on credit card charge of an extra 3.5% added to your bill. I usually tip 20%, we’ll because of that I just tipped 15%.
Well that’s pretty shitty of you.
Merchants often have to pay fees to process credit card payments and if there ever was a reason to add a fee, using an alternative payment method like a credit card would be it.

If the server is too pussy to inform me at the front end that there will be a fat service charge added to my bill then that's too bad for them.
Most states require a clear notification on the menu provided to you.
As an aside in CA all the service charges must be distributed to the staff.

Can we start a running list of restaurants that are doing this?

If the server didn't tell you aboutthe fee up front, they did it to themselves.

Picked up a To-Go order from a Baton Rouge Chinese joint. My wife had ordered using a menu I had picked up in December.
I go in and it was $65 for 2 people. Stunned I said that’s nowhere near what I saw on the menu. He said they don’t print menus anymore.
You have to scan a qc code to get the menu as prices are updated all the time. Or look them up online.
Nah. I’m getting over eating out very fast.
Don's Seafood, wife had fish and veggies mine was stuffed shrimp, we both had a small seafood gumbo, her a glass of wine and me one beer, split bread pudding for desert.
With 20% tip came to just over $100.
Wasn't too many years ago this was $50 tops.
Financial publications like the WSJ and others have written how many businesses are needlessly staying with higher "Covid" pricing + inflationary justification to determine where the customer's tolerance ends.
They found ours.
We're cooking at home more than ever.
I realize the restaurant business can be low margin, but many are going to price themselves out of the market for ordinary folks.

Servers will be replaced by AI bots or other automated devices. Or, the millions of illegals pouring over our Southern borders will take these jobs for min wage and no/few tips. Entitled service industry workers are in for a rude awakening.

Pretty easy way to run off customers with a 22% service charge. Why not just raise your prices 22%?
Well it’s raising prices without looking like you’re raising prices when looking at menu prices. For whatever that’s worth.

First, that's almost certainly against their agreement with the card issuers.
Second, who gives a frick? Bake that into your prices, don't add a bullshite fee on top. I promise you they MORE than make up for the fees with increased patronage that comes with accepting a form of payment 95% of customers prefer to use.
I had to pay for gas to get to the restaurant, should I deduct that expense from my check?

I never go back to restaurants that add tips to my bill and I damn sure won't go back to one that adds a service fee. I tip, and tip well when the service is good.

It'd benefit the waiting staff only 22% of potential by raising prices 22% compared to raising service to 22%. That's a lot of 22%'s, but basically by raising service instead of menu prices by 22%, wait staff gets nearly 5x the amount of money. When you make that little, it's a huge difference.

The server will communicate to the manager or owner that this service fee is unacceptable and unreasonable. Thats the point of not tipping at these places, sport.

It’s now 10 bucks for a cheeseburger and fries, my sons cheap steak as gone from 10 bucks to 20 at outback, which certainly isn’t a fancy place. I know tons of working couples that make 250 a year or more but are broke as they eat out all the time

What is the service fee for? Obviously it is going to the cost of running the business, which I get, but add in that service fee into the food prices. So just raise your prices and don't blind side the customers with a big increase once the bill arrives. Sure you might lose out on customers but if they're that cheap then its a good thing.
Wonder when places are going to start getting you to pay for your meal after you order and before they cook it. To prevent those certain types from dining and dashing or disputing the prices.

quote:At first I was thinking that was a pretty reasonable bill for your order, but you're actually right. It's amazing how our frame of reference has shifted so quickly. My kids are 18 and 21 and I can remember when all four of us could sit down and have an app, beverages, and entrees for under $70.

That's also why I mainly stick to hole-in-the-wall Asian take-out joints these days. They seem to have the most bang for the buck.

Nah. You still look like a douche. Why don’t you man up and communicate your issue with the manager/owner?

Then you wouldn't they wouldn't have any employees.
How can every restaurant, in countries throughout the world, survive and thrive paying their employees a living wage without a tipping culture? The business model for restaurants in the US is screwed up and the owners are greedy. "You will be paid $2.50 an hour and the customers have to make up the rest of your wages" It's absolutely bonkers

It makes servers hustle to take care of you vs. a Karl Marx inspired equality of pay by the time. If you like communism, you like hourly pay and hate people who get paid by commission who are good at their jobs.

Called in an order to go at the Waffle House Orange Beach Al. Was for 6 adults and 5 kids. The bill had a 20% up charge. Why I asked. Because of "covid" losses. I asked the manager to remove the charge. She said she could not, it was a corporate police. I left the order and went to Publix, got 3 doz donuts and 2 gals of milk. Everyone was happy.
This was for to go orders only
