Researcher: childhood leukemia a result of lack of exposure to germs

Fascinating stuff LINK
TL;DR, Childhood leukemia is a problem of affluent societies, and unheard of in developing countries. The immune system needs to be kickstarted by exposure to germs in the first year of life. If it doesn't, it overreacts when it finally is exposed, resulting in leukemia in some children. Our modern antiseptic environment doesn't provide this kickstart. This researcher's solution is to stimulate the immune system in newborns which, he says, should prevent leukemia.

Mel Greaves has a simple goal in life. He is trying to create a yoghurt-like drink that would stop children from developing leukaemia.
The idea might seem eccentric; cancers are not usually defeated so simply. However, Professor Greaves is confident and, given his experience in the field, his ideas are being taken seriously by other cancer researchers.
Based at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, Greaves has been studying childhood leukaemia for three decades. On Friday, it was announced that he had received a knighthood in the New Year honours list for the research he has carried out in the field.

He will be found suicided in the back of the head in a few months.

Is it unheard of in developing countries because they are worse at diagnosis and reporting disease?

Actually all people are equal you bigot

This dude quite obviously stole his research premise from George Carlin.
George Carlin on fear of germs.

What’s the infant mortality rate in the same countries where childhood leukemia is rare?

The anti-vaxers aren’t gonna like this at all

they just die long before they ever see a doctor so no one knows why they died.
people in developing countries dont have money for hospital tests and specialist doctors. they fix broken bones and burns and send you home, beyond that, if you die you die, and no one spends, or has the money, to find out "why" you died

Not a doctor, but I have a molecular biology background and used to work with MDs in both research and clinical environments.
My opinion is that there is a collection of isolated facts in that article that are true, but I don't think they will tie together into the narrative he's pushing.
I won't argue against him, though. Microbiome interaction with the host is a really interesting field that has been sort of known to be sort of important for quite a while now, and it looks like it's getting some interest these days.
Even if this ALL focus doesn't pan out, I'd bet that there will be some real breakthroughs related to gut ecology and health effects over the next few years, at a level way beyond the simple poop transplants for treating C. Diff. that gets brought up in the media every so often.

It happened with polio. It became an epidemic starting in the late 19th century because of improved sanitation. Children weren't constantly exposed to the virus so natural immunity faded.

I had childhood Leukemia and didn’t come from an affluent background. Dogs and Cats in the house, a dirty arse older brother bringing all kind of germs into the house.
I do hope he is on to something though because that straight sucked.

Let's see, what else is unheard of in developing countries?
Oh I know, obesity!
Boom! Obesity is now linked to a lack of germ exposure. My hypothesis is that childhood illnesses will prevent obesity.
Where's my Nobel?

Eat an ancestral diet (real food with prebiotic fiber to bolster probiotics, think vegetables and greens)
Live like your ancestors (moving outdoors in nature)
Sleep like your ancestors (with circadian rythym grounded by sunset and sunrise)
Simple, yet hard to pull off in modern times...
What is old is new...
Expect some to try to attempt to package this into a pill (this reductionist mindset that got us into this mess will again fail...)

Pursue a philosophy degree first...
The microbiome does indeed link all of these things...

This is why I'll sneeze directly into my babys face. Out of love.
