I drove by there just a couple of weeks ago. There isn’t another 50 ft to go up. It’s not a mountain.

My parents got the front of this in San Angelo. 3-6 inches expected and got 10 and flooded out all the dried out cotton fields. There something g to be said about preparedness and and act of God.

Maybe NOLA should move away from the gulf

Living in New Braunfels, last night was 20% chance of rain overnight. That is 1.5 hrs west…. But they had low percentage as well.

In the last hour there’s a storm that has dropped 4.5 inches between Marble Falls and Round Rock for a total over 12 inches the last 24 hours. Just insane numbers that keep coming in the area.

Has that area been really dry? We have a place closer to Abilene on 277 and was just there last week and it’s green, muddy and tanks are full.

My wife and I live in Canyon Lake. We were telling family tonight that the rain the last couple of months has been erratic. We have gotten plenty of rain all year.

Another part of this is that area is just getting so overbuilt with all the California refugees

Look Texas is a strong private property rights state if you own the land you can sell it and develop it and that part of Texas is getting overdeveloped it's a tragedy similar to the horrible floods of Harvey it was just so much rain in the area that had that much rain before but hadn't since so much has been built

But there's nothing that can make this right it just feels horrible and those children were just babies
I like many others on here have friends of friends with kids missing and its unimaginable

I imagine that that place is not even recognizable now versus what it used to be like that but there was a roadside diner headed out that way that had great cheesecake fluffiest cheesecake i've ever eaten

I've mentioned on here before my family had land right around Dripping Springs we had grandfathered access to walk to the springs

But with so much development and that was hard ground that didn't hold water anyway now it holds even less and it Pours into those rivers and it moves quick

I hope no one in a position that requires decision making that could legitimately be life and death is relying on a general percentage forecast from a weather app.

The potential for heavy rains was being explicitly forecast for the general area as early as 6am yesterday. Twelve hours later the area of most concern had been narrowed to basically where we saw the worst flooding play out.

There will be a time later to sort out how those forecasts (and eventual "nowcasts") were relayed to the concerned parties such as the NWS office over the area, local outlets, and county/city decision makers, but the potential for a significant rain event was forecast in advance.

At least not helpless kids. Analyze where the safety line was this time and go up another 50 feet.

50 feet may be a couple of miles away. Depending on the location it could be 10 miles away. What's a camp going to do, bus 200 kids to the swimming hole and canoe dock every day? Either you accept there's some level of risk that may only happen once every 40 years but if it does, it will be catastrophic, or you don't have a camp that offers water activities, which let's face it is the main attraction of most summer camps.

Not just Houston but all over. My buddy in Longview was sending his kid to a camp in that area until the kid got sick.

Kerrville and most of Kerr county has been in Exceptional Drought (the worst drought category) back to mid-March and Extreme Drought for the majority of 2025.

Took my crazy uncle all of a few minutes to bring up the government weather machine.

Pretty sure he posted nonstop in the Q thread.

As a father of a little girl, my heart hurts for the parents of these missing girls.

It’s not just California folks. I used to love visiting the Hill Country, but it’s not the same. Honestly, these camps are throwbacks to the Hill Country of old. My family used to have a double wide trailer on Turtle Creek in Kerrville that served as a little getaway from home. I guess I’m old, but it’s sad to see what has become of that place. It’s all in the name of progress, and it’s becoming more of a concrete jungle.

That said, I don’t think those are the places that would necessarily be at risk of this flooding. I assume most of the places closest to the river are the structures that have been there the longest.
